Endless possibilities for word building games with preschoolers and kindergartners!
Introduce word building to young students who have just learned the alphabet with our Make-A-Word Hop. Phonics lessons will become highly interactive and full of movement whenever you use this mat. Words for preschoolers and kindergartners will come naturally as students step, hop, and write on this unique mat! Above all, taking the first steps to learn how to read will be fun and exciting!
This Make-A-Word Hop mat is laminated with dry-erase material, meaning that it can be written on over and over again! Simply lay the mat out on the floor and begin writing letters in the four colorful blocks on the top row to form words.
The Make-A-Word Hop can be used in a variety of word building games and activities. Have students stand in the blocks on the bottom row with feet pictured in them. Build phonics skills by asking them to make the sound of the letter in the block above their feet. Students can jump from one block to the next and sound out simple 3 or 4-letter words.
Students can begin by learning 3 letter words. Start with just letters on the mat and have students recite the word correctly. Or, challenge students to write out their spelling words on the mat.
Advance to 4-letter words when students are ready. Furthermore, have students determine the missing letters from a word by only writing two or three letters on the mat.
Introduce simple words for preschoolers or teach high frequency words for kindergartners. Watch your students’ phonemic awareness and reading skills improve as a result of practice on this mat. Best of all, movement-based learning will boost young students’ comprehension and memory retention, while also improving gross motor skills.
Children love to move, play, and draw with markers, so this mat is perfect for keeping busy hands and bodies engaged! Sample Activity: Reading the Word
- First, write two letters of a word in two of the boxes on the mat. For example, leave the first box blank, then write “a” in the next box and “t” in the third box.
- Ask your student to fill in the missing letter to the word. In this instance, you would say “Complete the word ‘cat’ on the mat.”
- The student will write “c” in the first box using a dry-erase marker.
- Then, have the student hop in the box below the “c”. Ask them to make the sound of the letter.
- Repeat this with the rest of the letters in the word.
- Finally, have the student recite the complete word.
