Learn the order of operations with the PEMDAS Hop!

Memorizing and using the order of operations to solve multi-step math problems can be challenging for young mathematicians. Our PEMDAS Hop can help 4th, 5th, and 6th graders tremendously! This floor mat introduces kinesthetic activities that make learning the order of operations easy.

The PEMDAS Hop depicts and names the following math operations in the correct order they need to be solved: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. 3rd and 4th grade students will be able to gain familiarity with each operation and solve PEMDAS problems as they step and jump on the mat.

Many students struggle with multi-step problems and word problems in math, especially when they are learning so many new ways to manipulate numbers. When they jump along the PEMDAS Hop, they will be able to see the order of operations they need to use to solve a problem. They will also see each operation’s symbol and name spelled out in big, bold text on colorful blocks.

Lots of movement-based operations activities are possible with the PEMDAS Hop; The order of operations does not have to be a boring or difficult lesson! Catchy sayings such as “please excuse my dear Aunt Sally” are great to remember the order of operations while sitting at a desk or doing mental math. However, once you add movement into your order of operations activity, students’ math skills will improve greatly! Sample Activity: Wild Worksheets

• Have a student look at a number sentence on a worksheet, whiteboard, or note card.
• The student will jump on the first block (parentheses) and look to see if there are any in the problem. If there are, have the student solve that part of the equation.
• Then, the student will jump to the next block (exponent) and look for any in the problem. If there are, have the student solve that part of the equation.
• Have them continue down the mat until the PEMDAS problem is solved.
• Repeat with various order of operations problems.
