Below is our interview with Steve Orozco – a physical education teacher for PreK-2nd grade students in New York City. Steve teaches at Public School 228 – The Ivan Lafayette Early Childhood School of the Arts.
How long have you been a teacher?
I have been teaching for over 15 years.
How did you learn about Math & Movement?
I went to a session on Math & Movement at SHAPE America’s 95th Annual Eastern District Conference at Atlantic City in May 2016. Suzy Koontz, Math & Movement founder, was the speaker of the very engaging presentation.
How long have you been using Math & Movement in your classroom?
I have been using Math & Movement with my PE students at P.S. 228 since the start on the 2017-2018 school year.
What changes have you seen in your students since using Math & Movement?
Children are more focused in class;Â They are motivated and eager to incorporate movement and math skills into the PE program.
What is your favorite floor mat and why?
I like them all; however, I especially like the Skip Counting by 3’s mat because it gives the second graders a challenge. Most of them have not been introduced to multiplication yet and some of them set high standards for themselves and strive to achieve their goals.
