Study Focus: The impact of kinesthetic strategies on students' multiplication fluency
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the Math & Movement program on students’ multiplication fluency across multiple grade levels. 19 students participated in December 2015.
Students took an identical pre-test and post-test. The tests contained 32 multiplication problems, focusing on only one multiple per student (i.e., some students focused on only multiplication by 3s while others focused only on multiplication by 4s).
First, students took their pre-tests. Then, students worked one-on-one with teachers for approximately 90 minutes over two days. They practiced skip counting and multiplication using Math & Movement activities and Skip Counting floor mats. Finally, they completed their post-tests without using any Math & Movement materials.
As a result of participating in Math & Movement activities for only 90 minutes, students’ scores went from an average of 36% on the pre-test to 63% on the post-test. This is an increase of 27% points or a 75% improvement overall! These quick results underscore the program’s transformative impact on learning efficiency.
Challenges
-
The participating second grade students had no prior knowledge of multiplication when they took the pre-test.
