Activity Instructions

Hand a student a tens block. Have the student figure out where to put the tens block on the mat. Have the student figure out how the numerals at the top of the mat change after ten has been added to the tens place. Continue to give the student tens until there are ten tens blocks. Ask them, โ€œWhat happens to the hundreds place? What happens to the tens place?โ€ (Answer: The numeral in the tens place becomes zero and the numeral in the hundreds place increases by one.) Modify the activity and repeat by subtracting tens.
