Activity Instructions

Have a student stand on the START HERE block. Have them jump to the first two words and read them out loud. Use the words in a sentence. Then, have them jump to the contraction and read it out loud. Have them use the contraction in the same sentence as before, replacing the two words. Repeat this process for every set on the mat.

Example with “He” Contraction Mat:
Jump on “he is” with both feet. Use the words “he” and “is” in a sentence. He is going to eat oatmeal and bananas for breakfast.
Jump on “he’s” with your left foot. Use “he’s” in the same sentence you created for “he is” but replace the two words with the contraction. He’s going to eat oatmeal and bananas for breakfast.
