Activity Instructions

Have students discover the pattern that makes squared numbers. Have them start by finding the difference between 1 and 4 (3), and writing 3 on a paper and placing it halfway between the 1 and 4. Then find the difference between 4 and 9 (5) and write 5 on a paper and place it halfway between 4 and 9. Continue doing so for the rest of the mat. Then have students study the pattern that is made and discuss its significance.
