Second Grade Math Kit

Find the activities below that correspond with the materials found in our Second Grade Math Kit. Please select the material before selecting the grade to make sure your search results only provide activities for the mats in your Second Grade Math Kit.

Jump by Fives

Have your students start at START HERE. Have them hop around the mat on the blue multiples of five while they say the numbers out loud. As the student hops on each number, encourage them to simultaneously say the number name. If the counting gets ahead of the number the student is jumping on, encourage them to go back and start over. Stepping (or jumping) on the number and saying the number name simultaneously is evidence of a child’s understanding of one-to-one correspondence, which is essential to all mathematical processes. Be sure your student’s hopping is in sync with his/her saying the number!
Grade 2

Walk and Count the Hours

Have your students start at one and step on each number while saying the number as they walk around the clock.

Grade 1

Equations of Lines

Use the equation, y = mx +b to find points for the line. Have your students use objects to mark the points on the line. Use the line to discuss slope and transformations.

Grade 8

Card Battleship

Put objects at several points all around the mat (small cubes or even animal figurines work well). Set two decks of cards next to the mat (minus the face cards, keep Aces, A=1). Have students take turns turning over a card from each deck. The numbers they turn over will be their coordinates: black cards are positive numbers and red are negative for this game. If they “hit” one of the blocks on the mat they win it. The person with the most blocks at the end of the game wins. Example: Student turns over a red 4 and a black 6, they look at the mat for the coordinates -4, 6. If there is a block/figure at that coordinate, they win it and remove it from the board.

Grade 5, Grade 6

Partner Battleship

Have students find a partner and pick a quadrant and on the mat. Have students secretly write down four coordinates from that quadrant. Have their partners say a coordinate and if it corresponds to one of their partner’s points have them place a marker/object on that point. Continue until all four points are “hit” (or a certain amount of time has passed, or a specific number of guesses have been made) then switch roles.

Grade 5, Grade 6

Teamwork Coordinate Hop

Have one student stand on the mat and another spectating off the mat. The spectator will call out a coordinate, and the other student should then hop to that coordinate. Have them switch roles and repeat.

Grade 5, Grade 6

Clipboard Math

Clip a math worksheet with coordinates on a clipboard. Have students plot the points on the mat.

Grade 5, Grade 6

Adding and Subtracting Positive and Negative Numbers

Write addition and subtraction problems with positive and negative numbers on cards and use the Cartesian Coordinate Hop as a number line. If the math problem says 6 + -3, then have your students stand on 6 and take 3 steps backward to 3.

Grade 6

Make a Shape

Write Cartesian coordinates that create a shape such as a rectangle, square, or circle on notecards. Have a student select one card and place an object on the mat according to the Cartesian Coordinate on the card. Have them place the card under the object. Have the students in the class take turns selecting a card and finding the correct spot on the mat. Once all cards have been selected and placed on the mat, have the class determine the shape.

Grade 6

Find the Location

Write Cartesian coordinates on notecards. Examples are (2, 4), (5, 8), (-6,-6) or (-3, 6). Put the cards in a large hat or box and have students choose one card. Have students find the location on the mat that corresponds with the card. Have them mark the spot with an object and place the card under the object.
