Shopping

Have your students toss a bean bag onto the mat. Pretend that is the price (in cents) of an item (of their choosing) that they want to buy. Then have them determine how much change they would get back from a dollar by standing on the 100 (representing 100 cents) and taking away the amount of their item (walking/hopping back toward the beginning of the mat the number of spaces to represent the price of the item). The number they end on is how much change they would get back. For example, if the bean bag lands on the 61, they pretend their item costs 61 cents. They then stand on 100, count back 61 spaces and end on 39. Thus, their change would be 39 cents.

Grade 3, Grade 4

Rounding

Select a number and ask your students to round it to the nearest ten. Have them hop to the rounded number. You could also have a student roll a die or toss a bean bag to select the initial number.

Grade 3

Toss, Roll, and Add

MATERIAL(S): Add/Subtract Mat, bean bags, dice

Have a student toss a bean bag onto the mat and read the number. Then, the student rolls a die and adds or subtracts that amount to their number.

Grade 1, Grade 2

Freezing Tens

Have a student skip count by 10s to 100. Have another student call out ‘freeze.’ The skip counting student must freeze on that number and say how many 10s the number is equal to. For example, if the student freezes on 40, they will answer, “four tens”

Grade 1, Grade 2

Toss and Count

Have a student toss a bean bag onto the mat. Have the student start counting from that number all the way to 100.

Kindergarten

Count to 100 by 1’s and 10’s

Have your student start on one and walk each number as they say each number to 100. Clap when they reach a multiple of ten. Have the student go back and only hop the tens as they count to 100.

Involve the whole class by having ten students each walk a different row of numbers and stop at their multiple of ten. Then, after the class reaches 100, have each student say their multiple of ten to reach 100 again.
