Find the activities below that correspond with the materials found in our Second Grade Math Kit. Please select the material before selecting the grade to make sure your search results only provide activities for the mats in your Second Grade Math Kit.

Super Squares

Put construction paper down on the numbers 1, 2, 11, and 12. This makes a 2 x 2 square and the square number 4. Have students count the four squares to discover that 2 x 2 is actually 4. Ask, “What is the next square number? Who can guess?”

Students can find the answer by covering the 3 x 3 square (covering the numbers 1, 2, 3, 11, 12, 13, 21, 22, and 23). Have the children skip count by threes to discover that 3 x 3 is 9.

Continue laying down pieces of construction paper to make additional square numbers.

Sensational Square Number Stroll

Have your students stroll through the square numbers 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, and 100.
Square numbers are 1 x 1, 2 x 2, 3 x 3, etc.

Double-Digit Diagonal

This activity involves identifying a particular pattern on the Add & Subtract floor mat. Ask your students, “Can you find the only diagonal where all numbers are double digits?” After students identify the diagonal, you can ask “What happens when you add the two digits of each of these numbers?”

Simon Says

Play the game Simon Says using the Add & Subtract floor mat. An example could include, “Simon Says stand on a multiple of three”, or “Simon Says stand on an odd number”, a square number, a number of which the digits add to 10, etc. You can always adjust your instructions to the appropriate grade level!

Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8

Odd Owls

Say to your students, “Owls only like to land on odd numbers. Can you find an odd number, swoop down, and land on it?” Students will then work together to find which spaces on the mat are odd numbers and stand on them.

Grade 2

Even Eagles

Say to your students, “Eagles only like to land on even numbers. Can you find an even number, swoop down, and land on it?” Students will then work together to find which spaces on the mat are even numbers and stand on them.

Grade 2

Mixed Money

MATERIAL(S): Add/Subtract Mat, Quarters / Dimes / Nickels (real or paper), cups

Place some quarters, dimes, and nickels in paper cups. Students take one paper cup, add the coins, and stand on the sum on the mat.

Alternatively, students can take out one coin at a time, hop to the amount on the mat, and place the coin on the mat. Students can repeat this process of hopping and adding the coins until all coins are on the mat. The final coin placed on the mat is the total amount of change in the cup!

Grade 2

Quaint Quarters

MATERIAL(S): Add/Subtract Mat, quarters (real or paper), cups

Place quarters in paper cups. Make sure to have enough paper cups for each of your students. Students take one paper cup, add the quarters, and stand on the sum of the coins on the mat. Students can jump by 25s to the total value of the quarters in the cup.

Alternatively, you can also print large paper and do the same activity.

Daring Dimes

MATERIAL(S): Add/Subtract Mat, dimes (real or paper), cups

Place dimes in paper cups. Make sure to have enough paper cups for each of your students. Students take one paper cup, add the dimes, and stand on the sum of the coins on the mat. Students can jump by tens to the total value of the dimes in the cup.

Alternatively, you can also print large paper dimes and do the same activity.

Nifty Nickels

MATERIAL(S): Add/Subtract Mat, nickels (real or paper), cups

Place nickels in paper cups. Make sure to have enough paper cups for each of your students. Students take one paper cup, add the nickels, and stand on the sum of the coins on the mat. Students can jump by fives to the total value of the nickels in the cup.

Alternatively, you can also print large paper nickels and do the same activity.
