Verb Vibe

Have students find as many words that are verbs as they can. You can make it a race. Have the class each find a verb and stand on it and over it. Have each person act out the verb they are standing on as the rest of the class guesses what it is.
Grade 2, Grade 3

Bingo

Divide the class into two teams. Place all the letters of the alphabet into a container (or use the Alphabet hop). Have one person on the first team draw a letter and go stand on a word starting with that letter. Have them say the word they chose out loud. Have a person from the second team do the same. Take turns between the two teams. The goal being that a team would get five words in a row (any directions).

Grade 2, Grade 3

Letter Name

Have your student jump on each petal of the mat while simultaneously saying the corresponding name of each letter.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Creating Sounds

Have your student jump on each petal of the mat while simultaneously saying the corresponding sound of each letter.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Vowel Hop

Lay out the vowel cards. Have your student hop on or next to each while simultaneously saying the name of the vowel. Have them jump again and say the different short sounds each vowel can make in a CVC word. Have them repeat the sounds until they can do all five on their own.

/a,(æ)/ cat, ant
/e,(e)/ peg, egg
/i,(I)/ pin, pig
/o,(É’)/ hot, orange
/u,(ʌ)/ hut, bus

(List from https://www.teachphonics.co.uk/teaching-phonics.html)

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Directions

Choose a vowel for the middle of the mat. Direct a student to stand on a certain letter petal. Then to move to the center and say the letter there. Then have them move to another petal you choose that makes a CVC word. Ask them to repeat the same letters but this time say their sounds as they move through the mat. Have them blend the sounds together to form the word. Spell the word together. E.g. “p-e-g- spells peg!”

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Students Pick

Have your student place a vowel card on the mat on the circle that says ‘Place Card Here.’ Then have your student pick a letter to start on (could be by favorite color etc.). Have your student stand on the letter they chose and say the sound of the letter. Then have your student step to the center and say the vowel sound. Next, have your student choose a second letter from the petals, stand on it and say its sound. Then have them blending the three sounds together to see if it makes a recognizable word. Repeat with different petals and vowel cards. Some combinations do not make words. You could refer to them as “silly words” or non-English words.

Guide your student’s selection of vowel cards and petals to avoid word combinations that create profanity. Point out to students that sometimes silly words in English are real words in other languages.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Bean Bag Decides – Blending

Place a vowel card on the mat. Say the sound that vowel makes together. Have a student throw a bean bag on the mat. Be sure the bean bag lands on one petal. Ask what letter and sound it landed on? Ask another student (or the same one) to choose a second letter that makes a word with the first two. Spell the word they make together. E. g. “h-e-n- spells hen!”

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Mad Word Hatter – Blending

Write several words that can be made for each mat out on index cards. Place them all in a box/hat etc. Have a student draw a card and say the word out loud (but not showing it). Have another student pick the correct vowel for the word, place it on the mat and jump the correct letters to make the word picked. Repeat with different roles.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Write It

After doing several of the other activities challenge students to make as many real words as possible. Place a vowel in the center and have students sit around the mat and write down as many real words as they can. Have them take turns reading their lists.
