Zoo Animal Hop

Have students being on START HERE. The student will jump to the first block – ‘calf’ – and say, ‘CALF’. The student will follow the footprints to the matching adult animal – elephant. Jump to ‘elephant’ and say, ‘ELEPHANT. Have students continue down the mat, following the footprints.

For an added challenge, have students spell each word out loud.

Jumping Practice

Have students practice their motor skills by jumping down the mat one square at a time.

Add a challenge by having them toss a bean bag onto the mat and jumping over the square it is on.

Baby Animal

Material Needed: Papers/other to cover 4 squares

Cover up the name of the baby animals on the mat. Have students hopscotch down the mat. When they reach a covered square, have them recall the name of the baby using the parents before it. Try it again and cover the parents instead.

Ordinal Numbers

Have students jump on the first square and say, “One is first.”
Onto the next square and say, “Two is second.”
Onto the next and say, “4 is fourth,”
Onto the next and say, “five is fifth,”
Onto the next and say, “six is sixth.”
Onto the next and say, “seven is seventh.”
Onto the next and say, “eight is eighth.”
Onto the next and say, “nine is ninth.”
Onto the next and say, “ten is tenth!”

Then, have them toss an object onto a number on the mat. Have them jump down the mat while saying the ordinal numbers until they reach their object.

Numeral Recognition

Have students jump down the mat and trace each numeral as they say its name. After they have done that twice, have them place a piece of paper by each square. Then, have them jump down the mat and write the numeral on the paper as they say its name.

Mystery Animal

Give clues and have the students find the mystery animal on the mat. Clues could include:

  • appearance
  • letters in the names
  • their noise
  • how many letters the name has
  • the longest name
  • the shortest name
  • their baby’s name

Alphabetical Order

Have students jump on each farm animal in alphabetical order, saying each name as they jump on it.

Grade 2, Grade 3

Letters

Have the students jump down the mat as they say the first letter of each farm animal’s name.

Hopscotch Farm Animals

Have your students begin on START HERE.
Students will jump with their left foot on ‘cow’ and say, ‘COW.’
Next, jump right foot on ‘bull’ and say, ‘BULL.’
Then, jump just with one foot on ‘calf’ and say, ‘CALF.
Continue alternating between two-foot and one-footed movements to the end of the mat.

For an added challenge, have students spell each word out loud.

PreK, Kindergarten

Count With Your Fingers 1-10

Have students hop through the mat using their fingers to help them count. Students will hop on the first 2 boxes and put up fingers on each hand of the number they are standing on. Then, they count the fingers that are up and hop to the next number. For example, students will stand on 1 and 1. They will put 1 finger up on both hands, count both fingers, and hop to the 2. 1 finger plus 1 finger equals 2 fingers. This activity only uses half of the mat.
