Kindergarten, Grade 1

Bean Bag Decides

Have a student throw a bean bag on the floor mat. Be sure the bean bag lands on one word. The student goes to the bean bag alternating between one and two-footed hops. They will pick up the bean bag and say the word underneath the bean bag.

Repeat the activity until the student is comfortable with reading words.

Hopping Degrees

The “Their” and “There” Game

‘Their’ and ‘there’ are homophones. Homophones are words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings.

Option 1: Have students jump between these two words. Have them create a new sentence using the word they are standing on.
Option 2: Say a sentence out loud using ‘their’ or ‘there.’ Have the student jump to the correct word on the mat.

Grade 3, Grade 4

Creating Sentences

Have students create a sentence using a word on the mat. Students will jump on the word as they use it in the sentence. For example, “THEY (jumps on the ‘they’ block) like baseball.” You can have the student select which word he or she wants to use, or try having them toss a bean bag to make it more random!

Grade 2, Grade 3

What Do I Mean?

Have students jump on each word and explain its meaning. For example, ‘this’ is a way we can refer to a specific thing or situation just mentioned. This activity will help students better understand how to use these words in sentences.

Grade 3, Grade 4

Word Match

Create word cards that match the words on the floor mat. Put words in a pile and mix up the pile. Have students select a card and match it with the word on the mat. Have them place the card on the mat and then repeat with the rest of the cards.
