Have students take turns tossing a bean bag onto the mat. The student will identify the word it lands on and can 1) identify the word 2) spell the word and/or 3) use it in a sentence.

Trivia Hop

Ask students trivia questions about a state on your mat/s. Have them hop on the block of the state when they answer. Although this information might not be essential to the student’s curriculum, it’s a fun and stimulating way to use the mat.
Examples:
Which state is known as the sunshine state?
What is the largest state?
What is the smallest state?
What is the state bird of _______?
What is the state flower _______?

Flashcard Abbreviations

Cover the abbreviations on the mat. Create flashcards with the abbreviations. Have your students line up behind START HERE. You will stand at the end of the mat. Show the first student one of the flashcards. That student will hop to the block with the matching state/abbreviation. Continue through the cards and repeat.
