Jeopardy

A student should jump around the mat from block to block until they are told to stop. When they are told to stop by a spectator but not look at what they have stopped on. The spectator tells them either the sample sentence on the mat, the definition of an original sentence using the mark the student is on. The student then asks the question that would go with the answer given. Spectator, “This ends sentences beginning in who, what, where.” Student on the mat, “What is a question mark.” The student on the mat can then look where they are standing to check their answer.

Punctuation Jump

Have students familiarize themselves with the mat by jumping around on it and reading whatever they land on. Do this once while just reading the name of the mark, then just the definitions, and then the sample sentences.

Clipboard Math

Have students use the mat to complete the prime number hop worksheet provided.

Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6

Tic-Tac-Toe

Have students write nine of the prime numbers from the mat onto a tic tac toe grid. Toss a bean bag onto the mat and call out the number on which it lands. If students have the number on their paper, they mark it off. When a student gets three in a row, they call out, “Tic-tac-toe!”

Identify Primes

After students are familiar with the prime numbers, have them then challenge themselves to see who can remember the most by finding them on a hundreds chart. They can check themselves by referring to the mat.

Prime Factoring

Combine this mat with factoring problems. Have students find their factors on this mat. If they are not there, explain that it means that they can be factored more to find the number’s prime factors.

Make Groups

Have students place the corresponding number of objects onto each square on the mat. Then, challenge students to make that number of objects into equal groups of any number. After a few tries, discuss that it can’t be done. Hence, these are called prime numbers.

Prime Hop

Have students jump down the mat while calling out each prime number.

You can have the whole class participate by having them stand along the long edges of the mat and call out the numbers with the student who is hopping.

Notecard Base Words

Students will choose a notecard (provided below) on the notecard there is a base word that is not listed on the mat. Students will hop to the prefix that makes sense with that base word. For example, you will see the word “Appear” on a notecard. Students will have to jump to the prefix that makes sense for that base word. So, they will hop to “Dis” to create the word “Disagree”

Prefix Sentences

Have students hop until they are told to stop. Students will say the prefix that they land on, and then come up with a sentence using the prefix. They can come up with a new word using the prefix they land on, or use the example word in a sentence.
