Planet Hopscotch

Students will play hopscotch (alternating hopping off of both feet and one foot) up and down the mat while announcing each planet as they land on it.

Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4

Comparing Numbers

Make a number on the mat with numerals, e.g. 230.46 and make a number similar to it above it in line with place value, such as 230.046. Ask the students to compare which number is bigger. Do with several numbers.

Grade 5

Multiplying

Have a student create a number on the mat. Then, have them multiply it by 100, 10, .10 or .01. Which way do the digits shift? Have them move the number cards to reflect the new number.

Grade 5

Rounding

Have a student create a number on the mat. Then, have them round the numbers to all of the different place values. Use 0 cards for any place after the place value they are rounding to.
Grade 3: Round to 10s and 100s
Grade 4: Round to nearest tenth or hundredth.
Grade 5: Round to nearest thousandth

Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5

Expanded Form

Have a student create a number and jump it out on the mat. After reading the number, have them write each numeral’s value on an index card and place it above each numeral. For example, after reading the number 24.398 students would write 20 on a card and place it above the 2, 4 and place it above the 4, .3 above the 3, .09 above the 9, and .008 above the 8.

Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6

Adding or Subtracting Numbers

Create notecards, writing + and – with numbers up to the amount of digits you want them to add or subtract (+.125, -.56, etc.). Mix up the cards and place into a large hat or box (or in a pile on the floor if you do not have those items available).

Have a student create a number on the mat up to the amount of place values from which they are able to add or subtract. Have them select a card and add or subtract this number from the number displayed on the mat (depending on the plus or minus from the index card). Begin with the ones digit. Have them figure out the new number in the ones column and place it above the mat. Check to see if the tens digit needs to be modified, then the hundreds, continuing until they have completed the problem. Then, have them hop out their answer.

Examples using decimals:
Build the number 435.102 then add 21.894 to the number. What number do you have now?
Build the number 3,459.439 then add .192 to the number. What number do you have now?
Build the number 90.367 then subtract the number .860. What number do you have now?

Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6

One Change Leads to Another

Write + 1000, +100, +10, +1, -1000, -100, -10, -1, +.01, -.001, etc, on notecards. Mix up the cards and add to a large hat or box (or in a pile on the floor if you do not have those items available). Have a student select a card and add or subtract place value blocks (at the bottom of the mat) according to the index card. Then have the student change the number cards (at the top of the mat) accordingly to create the new number.

Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6

Adding Tenths

Hand a student a tenths block. Have the student figure out where to put the tenths block on the mat. Have the student figure out how the numerals at the top of the mat change after one tenth has been added to the tenths place. Continue to give the student tenths until there are ten tenths blocks. Ask them, “What happens to the ones place? What happens to the tenths place?” Modify the activity and repeat by subtracting hundreds.

Grade 5, Grade 6

Adding Hundredths

Hand a student a hundredths block. Have the student figure out where to put the hundredths block on the mat. Have the student figure out how the numerals at the top of the mat change after one hundredth has been added to the hundredths place. Continue to give the student hundredths until there are ten hundredths blocks. Ask them, “What happens to the tenths place? What happens to the hundredths place?” Modify the activity and repeat by subtracting hundredths.

Grade 5, Grade 6

Bean Bag Decides

Have a student create a number and jump it out on the mat. Then, have them toss a bean bag on one of the number cards on the mat. Have the student remove the number underneath where the bean bag landed and replace it with a new number card. They will remake the number with the place value blocks and hop to read the new number.
