Find the activities below that correspond with the materials found in our Second Grade Math Kit. Please select the material before selecting the grade to make sure your search results only provide activities for the mats in your Second Grade Math Kit.

Use It

Once familiar with the mat, have students hop down the mat giving an example of each part of speech they land on. (Can use an example given as reference.)

Jump the Mat

Have students jump down the mat while reading each part of speech and its definition to familiarize themselves with the mat.

Clipboard Word Fun

Clip a worksheet that helps students learn the sight words to a clipboard. Have students hop on the mat to solve the worksheet.

The worksheet could include words or numbers they need to copy from the mat.
Seven =_____ (have them find the word on the mat and then write the correct numeral)

Number Match

Print the numeral cards found on the following pages (or create your own!). Have students match the numerals with their corresponding box on the floor mat.

If you have plastic numbers, you could also put them into a hat or box and have students select a number and match it on the mat.

Word Clapper

Follow the instructions for the ‘Word Match’ activity. Instead of shouting the word, the student jumps on the word that amount of times, saying the word and clapping simultaneously. For example, when the student lands on the three, they will jump up and down three times while they clap.

Word Match

Create word cards that match the words on the Number Word Hop (or print the words on the following pages). Put the words in a pile and mix up the pile. Have students match the word cards with the words on the floor mat by placing the word card on or beside the word on the mat. When the student finds the word, they shout the word (if the learning environment permits loud noises.) Then the student places the word card on the corresponding word and goes to select another word.

Bean Bag Decides

Have a student toss a bean bag on the Number Word Hop. Be sure the bean bag lands on one word. Have the student jump to the bean bag alternating between one and two-footed hops. Then, have them pick up the bean bag and say the word underneath the bean bag.

Word Hopscotch

Have a student begin on START HERE. Have the student read the first word. Have your student hop on the word with one foot while simultaneously saying the word. Have the student read the next word. Have your student jump with two feet on the mat while simultaneously saying the second word. Be sure your student says the words correctly. Tell the student the word if they don’t recognize a word on the mat. Have them continue alternating between one foot and two-footed hops to the end of the mat. Repeat the activity until the student is comfortable with all of the words.

The Word Hop

Have the student begin on START HERE. Have a student read the first word. Have the student jump on the word while simultaneously saying the word. Be sure that the student says the words correctly. Tell the student the word if they don’t recognize a word on the mat. Have them continue hopping and reading words until the end of the mat. Repeat the activity until the student is comfortable with reading words.

Trace the Numbers

Use the ‘Trace the Number’ worksheet found on the following pages. Have students crouch down on the mat and trace each numeral and/or number word with two fingers. After they trace on the mat, have them trace the same numeral or word on the worksheet.
