Count the Fruit

Have students line up in front of the mat. Give them a number to go sit on. As students sit on the mat, they will point to each of the fruits and count them. Make sure that students say the fruit name, and take their time to count each of the fruits.
Kindergarten, Grade 1

Favorite Fruits

Have students look at all of the fruits on the mat, and then give them the opportunity to go jump on which fruit on the mat is their favorite. Have students tell you what fruit they have jumped on, and what number they are standing on.

PreK, Kindergarten, Grade 1

Identify the Fruit

Have students step on a fruit of their choosing and identify what that fruit is. As they step on the fruit, have them say the fruit name. Students can either jump through the mat starting at banana, or they can choose randomly which fruit to start with. Focus mainly on just the names for each fruit.

Appendix lists worksheets

Line Plots

Have groups of students make line plots based on the measurements of various classroom objects, for example, lengths of students’ pencils.

Grade 4

Experiment With Transformations In The Plane

Have students make a shape on the mat and practice translations, reflections, and rotations with the shape. Then have them use two congruent shapes and translate/reflect/rotate as necessary to place them on top of one another. **Add a line on the mat for students to use as needed for reflection, etc.

Grade 8

Symmetrical Lines

Have students create shapes on the mat with paper or blocks. Have them determine how many lines of symmetry the shapes have. Then, have them try it with different letters of the alphabet!

Grade 4

Area

Option 1: Place a rectangular shape down on the mat (that fits inside the squares). Have students calculate the area of the shape by counting the number of squares it covers.

Option 2: Create notecards with different multiplication questions. Give students paper strips or cubes the size of the grid squares. Have the students select a notecard and use their paper or cubes to create a shape (array) matching the multiplication problem. Have them find the area of the shape.

Grade 3

Mystery Shape

Create cards with shape characteristics on them such as names of polygons, or a number of sides or vertices. Have shapes that match the cards already created out on the board (or allow students to create them as they draw the cards). As the students draw the cards, have them match them with the corresponding shape. You can use squares, parallelograms, rectangles, pentagons, hexagons, rhombuses, etc.

If you also have the Geometric Shape Hop mat, you can place it next to the quadrant to help students make the shapes.
