Mystery Spelling Word

Say letter sounds (that create a word) and have a student find the matching letter cards. Words can be off of students’ spelling lists, or words they previously have spelled. Then, have them jump on the letters they found and say the word they made. For example, if you say, “mmm”, they will find the ‘M’ card and place it on the mat. You say the short i sound, they find the ‘I’ card and place it in the next square on the mat. Then say, ‘t.’ They find the ‘T’ card and place it on the third square on the mat. Then, the student jumps the letters and says “mit.”
Kindergarten, Grade 1

Bean Bag Decides

Place a second and a third letter on the floor mat. Lay down letter cards on the floor that would be good options for the first letter of your word. Have a student throw a bean bag on the letter cards on the floor. They will select the letter card that the bean bag lands on and place it as the first letter on the floor mat. Then, have the student sound out the word, using the Make-A-Word Hop activity for instructions.

Example:
Leave the first block blank. Place ‘A’ on the second box and ‘T’ on the third block. The student tosses the bean bag and it lands on ‘C.’ The student will place the ‘C’ on the first block and sound out “cat.”

Rhyming Words

After doing the Make-A-Word activity, leave a word like ‘cat’ on the mat. Hand a student the letter B card and ask them to place it on top of the C card. Ask them what word they just made. Then have them make as many different rhyming words as they can. Have a student write on the board each word they make.

Spelling

Place a word card in the last box. Have students find the letters to spell the word and place them in the first three boxes. Have students take turns jumping the mat while spelling out the word they made. For example, instruct your student to make the word “bat.” The student places the cards for the letters, B, A, and T, and says, “B-A-T, bat.”

Kindergarten, Grade 1

The Spell-A-Word Hop

Make a word for your students by placing three letters on the mat that form a word such as “mat” or “cat.” Have your student stand below the first letter of the word. The student says the sound of the letter. Then, the student side steps to the box below the second letter of the word. The student says the second letter sound. The student side steps again and says the third letter sound. Then, they side-step to the next box and blend the word. They then jump three times, saying the word on each jump. Have them find the corresponding word card and place it on the mat with their spelled out word!

Example:
The letters on the mat are “m,” “a,” and “t.” The student begins on the foot box below the letter m. The student says “Mmmmmmm.” The student side steps to “a” and says “aaaaaaaa.” The student hops to “t” and says “t” quickly. The student immediately sidesteps to the box below the word “mat” and says “mat.” The student jumps three times saying “mat” with each hop. The student finds the “mat” word card and places it on the mat to the right of the letter “t.”

Change letters and repeat the activity.

Spelling Word Phoneme Recognition

To help students recognize letter sounds in a spelling word, lay all of the letter cards that spell out a word on the floor. Have your students step on each letter card while saying all of the sounds that the letter can make. For example, ‘c’ sounds are /s/ and /k/. Be sure that your students say the sound correctly. Tell your students the sound if they do not immediately know the sound. Continue until the students are familiar with the sounds of that specific letter.
