Lonely Numbers

Have your students pretend that numbers, like people, feel lonely sometimes. Your students can help the numbers not feel lonely by placing objects on the numbers! Place one object on the number one. Place two objects on the number two. Choose two of the same thing—like two shoes, two books, or two toy cars. Place three objects on the number three. Consider choosing three mittens, rocks, or spoons. Continue placing objects on the numbers! For bigger numbers like seven, try 7 pennies, paper clips, or acorns.

Buddies

Notice that all the numbers have corresponding diamonds. This is intended for children to learn the value of numbers. Notice that the number two has two diamonds. These two diamonds are buddies. Two is an even number! The number three has three diamonds. Two of the diamonds are buddies but there is one leftover! Odd numbers have one leftover. Three is an odd number.

The Number Walk-Backwards

Counting backward is a prerequisite for subtraction. Encourage your student to start on seven and take steps to zero while saying the numbers!

The Number Walk

Take the number walk from zero to seven. As your child steps on each number, encourage your child to simultaneously say the number name. If the counting gets ahead of the number your child is stepping on, encourage your child to go back and start over. Stepping on the number and saying the number name simultaneously is evidence of a child’s understanding of one-to-one correspondence, essential to all mathematical processes. Be sure your student’s stepping is in sync with them saying the number!

Bean Bag Decides

Throw a bean bag on the Make Nine Floor Mat. Jump to the bean bag alternating between one and two-footed hops. Pick up the bean bag and say the numeral underneath where the bean bag landed.

Hopscotching the Numbers

Have students start on START HERE. Have students say “one” while hopping with one foot on the numeral one. Then have students jump with two feet on the two, clap, and say “two.” Continue alternating between one foot and two-footed hops to the end of the mat. Be sure that your student says the numerals correctly. Tell your student the numerals if your student does not know them.

Make Nine

Say to a student, “Choose a number and then walk to it.” Ask the student, “How many steps would you have to take to reach nine?” Child figures it out (either visually or can jump to nine) and answers. For example, if they choose to stand on 5, then answer that it would take 4 steps to reach 9, then the adult responds, “Yes, 5 plus 4 makes 9.” If the student answers incorrectly, have them count again.

Race-to-One

Start on nine. Roll one die. Take the number of steps on the die. The first one to reach exactly zero wins. If the roll of the second die yields a number that causes you to surpass zero, go back to nine.

Countdown

Have students pretend they are on a rocket ready for blast-off. Have one student start on the 9 and count down as they jump down the mat. Have the class shout the count down along with the jumper, 9, …2, 1, blastoff. Have everyone jump up and clap while saying “blast-off!”
