Rounding

Say a number less than 1,000 and have students round it to the nearest 100. Say a number less than 100 and have students round it to the nearest 10. To round, have them first find which two numbers their number is between on the mat. If rounding to the nearest 10, ask them if the second digit is 5 or above. If so, they choose to round to the higher number. If rounding to the nearest 100, ask them if the tens digit is 5 or above. If so, then it is closer to the higher 100.
Grade 3

Multiply

Have one student stand on a number on the mat. Have another roll a die. Have the students then work together to figure out the product of the two numbers. For example, the student stands on 40. The other student rolls a 4. They multiply 40 x 4 to reach 160. (They could count to 40 four times, as well.)

Grade 3

Missing Numbers

Cover up random numbers on the mat with pieces of paper. Have students hop through the mat. When they arrive at a covered number, have them say the number and then uncover it to make sure they were correct. Have them continue through the rest of the mat and then switch up the numbers!

Grade 2

The Card Rules

This game is played in pairs. Two cards are drawn from the pile of 10-1,000 cards (using only the multiples of 10). Each student receives one card. The students decide who will stand on the mat and who will give directions. Student A stands on the mat on the number that is on their card. Student B directs them on how to move to the number on the second card without revealing their number. Student B will call out directions such as, ‘add 20,’ subtract 30,’ ‘add 40,’ ‘subtract 50,’ etc. for second grade and ‘multiply your number by 3’ for third graders. When the student on the mat reaches the number on the card, the students switch places.

Grade 2, Grade 3

Bean Bag Toss – Subtraction

Have a student throw two bean bags onto the mat and subtract the numbers. If you are working on subtracting multiple numbers at a time, try using more bean bags!

Grade 2

Bean Bag Toss – Addition

Have a student throw two bean bags onto the mat and add the numbers together. If you are working on adding multiple numbers at a time, try using more bean bags!

Grade 2

Subtraction

Have your students all stand on a different number on the mat. Call out a number that is a multiple of ten. All students will then subtract the number you called from their number. Repeat several times!

Grade 2

Addition

Have your students all stand on a different number on the mat. Call out a number that is a multiple of ten. All students will then add the number you called to their number. Repeat several times!

Grade 2

Race to Ten

Create notecards with the multiples of 10 or 100 (10, 20, 30, 40, etc). Have the cards face down near the floor mat. Have the players line up at 1,000. Choose who goes first (either by rolling a dice, guessing closest to a number, etc). The first player selects a notecard and jumps counting backward towards 10 by that number. The second player selects a card and jumps counting backward by that number. Continue until the first person reaches 10.

**Add a fun twist – At any point in the game, if the second player, for example, lands on the spot of the first player, then the first player goes back to 1,000!

Grade 2

Race to 1,000

Create notecards with the multiples of ten or 100 (10, 20, 30, 40, etc). Have the cards face down near the floor mat. Have the players line up at 10. Choose who goes first (either by rolling a dice, guessing closest to a number, etc). The first player selects a notecard and adds the number they are on to the number they drew. The second player selects a card and does the same. Continue until the first person reaches 1,000.

**Add a fun twist – At any point in the game, if the second player, for example, lands on the same spot as the first player, then the first player goes back to zero!
