Adding or Subtracting Unlike Fractions

Have students choose 2 or more fractions with different denominators and add/subtract the 2 fractions together. Work on finding the least common denominators together.
Grade 5, Grade 6

Adding or Subtracting Like Fractions

Have students choose 2 or more fractions with the same denominator on the wall banner and add/subtract the two fractions together.

Grade 4, Grade 5

Fly Swatter

In this activity, students will need a fly swatter. The teacher will say a certain fraction that makes up a whole, and the student has to run up and smack the fraction with the fly swatter. For example, the teacher might say “6 of these make up 1 whole” and the student is to run up and smack the ⅙ portion of the wall banner.

Make A Whole

Have students stand in front of the wall banner and ask them how many of a certain fraction make up a whole. Have students point to each of the fractions that you ask, and count them out to tell you how many make up one whole. For example, you will ask a student “How many fourths make up one whole?” And the student will walk up and point to the ¼ section of the banner. He/she will then count how many fourths make up a whole and then say the number aloud.

Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6

Fraction Wall Walk

Have students start at the top with one whole. Students will point to one whole and say “one” Then, they will move on to ½ and count how many ½ are in a whole. Continue down the banner until they get to the bottom, counting how many of each fraction make up a whole.

Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6

Clipboard Math

Clip a fraction worksheet on a clipboard. Have your student figure out the answers to the fractions by looking at the banner.

Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6

Fraction Questionnaire

Ask your students the following questions. As you ask them the questions, have them touch the answers. Having students cross their bodies as they touch the fractions will enhance learning and engage both sides of the brain.

Where is the whole number one? Touch it. How long is it? Can you measure it?
Can you count the boxes that say ½? How many are there? Touch them as you count.
How many halves are in the whole number one? How long is the box that says ½? Touch them as you count.
Can you count the boxes that say ⅓ ? How many thirds are in the whole number one? How long is the box that says ⅓ ?
Can you count the boxes that say ¼ ? How many fourths are in the whole number one?
How long is the box that says ¼ ?
How many fourths are in ½?

Freddy Fibonacci’s Awful Allowance

Ask your students the following:

If your allowance followed the Fibonacci sequence, how many days would it take you to earn 8 dollars? Would you rather have your money double every day for 10 days or grow with the Fibonacci sequence?

This activity follows the concept in ‘Freddy Fibonacci’s Awful Allowance’, by our program founder Suzy Koontz. You can find this book on our website.
