Complete the Pattern

Cover up one or several blocks on the mat. Have students say the missing number out loud as they hop through the mat.

Create Fibonacci Numbers

Have a student begin at START HERE. Have them follow this pattern down the mat:
Hop to the red block and say, “one.”
Hop on the green zero block and say, “zero.” Hop on the red one block and say, “plus one,” Hop on the blue one block and say, “equals one.”
Hop on the red one block and say, “one.” Hop on the blue one block and say, “plus one.” Hop on the orange two block and say, “equals two.”

As they hop, they are creating the addition problem that creates the Fibonacci Numbers.

Google Doc mentions worksheets and exponent cards in the appendix

Write an Equation

Have the student throw a bean bag onto a square and then roll a dice to decide the base number and make a story problem using the equation the bean bag landed on.
For example, the bag lands on x to the 3rd and the base number is 2. A problem could be Sammy has 2 apples. Every day he doubles the numbers of apples he gets. How many apples will he have on the 3rd day?

Grade 6

Break it Down

Cover up the left side of the mat. Call out an exponent such as x to the 5th. Have two students race to the matching exponent on the mat. Repeat several times. Keep the winning student from each round and see how long they can stay in the game.

Grade 6

Race to the Exponent

Cover up the right side of the mat. Call out an equation such as x times x times x. Have two students race to the matching exponent on the mat. Repeat several times. Keep the winning student from each round and see how long they can stay in the game.

Grade 6

What’s Missing?

Place sheets of paper over blocks on the mat, for example, all left columns, all right columns, or mismatched. Have students use the exponent cards found in the following pages to fill in the missing blocks.

Grade 6

Lowest Number Wins

The same rules as “Highest Number Wins,” except the lowest total at the end wins.

Grade 6

Highest Number Wins

The student will roll a die to determine their base number. Then, they will throw a bean bag on a space on the mat blindfolded (or eyes covered) and solve their exponent. Play several rounds and have students add their numbers each round. Whoever has the highest total at the end wins.

Grade 6

Bean Bag Toss

Write numbers 0-9 on flashcards (or whatever numbers you are working up to). Hand the first student a card. They will toss the bean bag on the mat and jump to it. Then, have the student create (and possibly solve) the exponent using the number on their flashcard.
