Clap the Exponent

Have students clap the exponent. For example, as they hop on the x^5 block, they will clap five times as they say, “x times x times x times x times x.” Have the whole class clap as one student hops down the mat. Option 2: Replace x with a number and complete the same process. Option For Grade 5 – replace x with 10 and complete the same process.
Grade 6

Jump on the Exponent

Have the student start on START HERE. The student will first jump on the block x^0 and say, “x to the zero power.” Then, hop to the right and say, “equals one.” Have the student continue down the mat with this pattern.

Grade 5, Grade 6

Week Versus Weekend

Have the student hop the days of the week. Have them say the words as they hop along the mat. Then, have the student hop on the weekend days.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Word Hopscotch

Have the student start on START HERE. Have the student read the first word. Have the student hop on the word with one foot while simultaneously saying the word. Have the student read the next word. Have the student jump with two feet on the mat while simultaneously saying the second word. Be sure that the student says the words correctly. Tell the student the word if the student doesn’t know it. Continue alternating between one foot and two-footed hops to the end of the mat. Repeat the activity until the student is comfortable with all of the words.

Grade 1

Bean Bag Decides

Have a student throw a bean bag on the floor mat. Be sure the bean bag lands on one word. Jump to bean bag alternating between one and two-footed hops. Pick up the bean bag and say the word underneath the bean bag.

Grade 1

Word Clapper

Follow instructions for the ‘Word Match’ activity. Instead of shouting the word, the student hops on the word three times, saying the word and clapping simultaneously.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Word Match

Create word cards that match the words on the Days of the Week Hop floor mat (or print the words on the following pages). Put the words in a pile and mix up the pile. Have students match the word cards with the words on the floor mat by placing the word card on or beside the word on the mat. When the student finds the word, they shout the word (if the learning environment permits loud noises.) Then the student places the word card on the corresponding word and goes to select another word.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Trace the Word

Use the ‘Trace the Word’ worksheet found on the following pages. Have students crouch down on the mat and trace each word with two fingers. After they trace on the mat, have them trace the same word on the worksheet.

The Word Hop

Have the student begin on START HERE. Have the student read the first word. Have the student hop on the word while simultaneously saying the word. Be sure that the student says the words correctly. Tell the student a word if they don’t know the word. Continue hopping and reading words until the end of the mat. Repeat the activity until the student is comfortable with reading the words on the mat.

What Do You Do?

Ask the students what they like to do on each day of the week. Relate an activity to each day. Then ask, “What day do you _______?” Have them hop to that day of the week.
