Follow the Leader

This is an activity to get students up and moving around. Have students get in a line. The student at the front will jump from one dot to another all through the mat and the following students are to do the exact same thing that the leader does. When everyone gets through the mat, the front leader goes to the end, and the new leader starts a new course for everyone to follow.

Make Shapes

Have students get a dry erase marker. Give each student a different shape to make by connecting dots with a line. Ask students to make the following shapes: square, triangle, and rectangle. For more advanced students, ask them to make these shapes: Rhombus, kite, star, pentagon, trapezoid, parallelogram, diamond, hexagon, octagon, arrow, heptagon…

Game of Connect the Dots

Have two students each get a different colored dry erase marker (Please make sure it is a dry erase marker only). The object of the game is to complete more boxes than their opponent. You move by connecting two dots with a line. When you place the last ‘wall’ of a single square, the box is yours and you can write a letter or number inside the box to show that it is yours. Players move in turns, but when a player completes a box, he or she gets another turn. The game ends when all boxes have been taken. The student with the most boxes wins.

Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5

Think of a Word

Have the student jump on the first letter, ‘u.’ Then, have them come up with a word that starts with ‘u.’ (That isn’t umbrella!) Continue down the mat.

Letter Trace

Use the ‘Trace the Word’ worksheet found on the following pages. Have students crouch down on the mat and trace each letter with two fingers. After they trace on the mat, have them trace the same letter on the worksheet.

PreK, Kindergarten, Grade 1

Letter Match

Use the letter cards provided on the following pages or create your own cards that have the letters u, n, w, m, b, d, p, and q. Make five cards of each letter. Put all of the letter cards in a pile and mix them up. Have the student draw from the cards and match each card to the spot on the floor mat. Once they find the matching letter, have them place the card beside or on top of the mat. Have the student say the letter name and sound as they match the letters.

The Letter Hop

Have the student begin on START HERE. Jump on the letter ‘b’ and say, “b, ball, bbb, bbb, bbb.” Then, continue to jump to each of the letters, saying the letter name, name of the picture, and sound of the letter.
