The teacher will say one of the words on the mat out loud. The student will then spell that word and then jump to the word. Students can also use the word in a sentence after spelling it.

Have a student toss a bean bag onto the mat. Be sure that the bean bag lands on a space on the mat. Hop to the bean bag, and pick it up. Say the word and the meaning of the word.

Have students hop from one word to the other saying each of the words out loud. As students say the word, have them also say the meaning, or use the word in a sentence.

Follow instructions for the Mad Word Hatter activity. Instead of shouting the word, the student hops on the word three times, saying the word and clapping simultaneously.

Mad Word Hatter

Create word cards that match color words on the mat. Place cards in a large hat or a box. The student draws a word and then hops on the mat to the word. When the student finds the word, they will shout the word (if the learning environment permits loud noises). The student places the word card on the corresponding word and goes to the hat to select another word.

Have a student toss a bean bag onto the mat. The student will jump to the space on the mat with the beanbag. Then, the student will ‘spy’ something in the room that is that color. The other students will take turns guessing what that object is.

Have a student toss a bean bag onto the mat. Be sure the bean bag lands on one word. Hop to the bean bag alternating between one-footed and two-footed hops. Pick up the bean bag and say the word underneath the bean bag.

Create word cards that match the color words on the Color Word Hop Floor Mat. Put words in a pile and mix up the pile. Have students match the word cards with the words on the Color Word Hop Floor Mat by placing the word card on or beside the word on the floor mat.

The Color Word Hop

Have the student begin on START HERE. Have the student read the first word. Have them hop on the word while simultaneously saying the word. Be sure that your student says the words correctly. Tell your student a word if your student doesn’t know the word. Continue hopping and reading words until the end of the mat. Repeat the activity until the student is comfortable with reading words.
