How many jumps?

The student will stand on a number and will be asked how many spots they must jump to reach a certain number. For example, the student will stand on second. Ask, “How many jumps to reach sixth?”
Grade 1

Hop the Mat

Have the student jump all the numbers starting at first and working all the way to tenth, making sure to say the numbers out loud. The students can also jump every other number starting at one and jump every other number starting at two.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Add or Subtract by Fives

The student will start on any number and will subtract or add five by walking on the boxes on the mat. When the student reaches the correct number, the student will jump and say that number out loud. Phrase it in a question such as, “Who would finish 5 people after 3rd place?”

Kindergarten

Who finishes first?

Tell the student two numbers. The student will determine which number is would finish a race first. Using the pictorial representation/or mat placement, they can determine which is closer to the start and which would finish first. For example, “Who would finish a race first– the person in second place or fifth place?”

Kindergarten

Counting

Have students begin counting from the “first” box on the mat. As they hop down the mat, have them say the number order they are on.

Kindergarten

Number Sentence

Create multiplication, addition, division, and subtraction number sentence cards. The students will jump on the operation they are using and answer the number sentence.

Grade 3

Bean Bag Toss

A student will throw a bean bag on an operation box. The student will then come up with a number sentence that relates to that operation. For example, if the beanbag lands on multiplication, the student will jump to the multiplication box and say “3 x 4 = 12”. When the student says, “times” they will jump on the multiplication sign.

Grade 3

Greater Than or Less Than

Have students roll two dice one at a time. Have them compare the two numbers and jump on the mat to say if the first roll was greater than, less than, or equal to the second. Have them place each die on the correct side of the symbol. Do this several times. (Instead of dice, you could also use number flashcards.)

Grade 1

Word Problems

Give your students a word problem (worksheet linked below). The students will identify which operation is mentioned in the word problem. The students will then jump on that symbol box and say its name.
