Skip Counting Fun

Have students stand next to the pattern of skip counting numbers, either by the row or the column. Have the students jump on each number while skip counting. It is helpful for the students to compare skip counting on the Multiplication Hop Floor Mat with skip counting on the Skip Counting floor mats. Use both floor mats together to increase comprehension.
Grade 3, Grade 4

Clipboard Math

Clip a worksheet that involves multiplication or division by threes to a clipboard. Have the student solve the problems using the mat.

Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5

Division

To divide, have the student stand on any multiple of three then jump on the multiples back to 0. How many jumps it takes is the answer. For example, if the problem is 30 ÷ 3, they will begin on the 30 facing START HERE. They will then jump on all of multiples of 3, counting each jump, one (on 27), two (on 24), three (on 21) and so on. When they reach zero on their tenth jump, they will say, “30 divided by 3 equals 10!”

Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5

Multiplication

Give a student a multiplication problem by three (verbally or from a flashcard). Example: 3 x 3
The student will begin on START HERE. They will jump forward on the multiples of three until they’ve jumped three times. When they get to the third red square, their answer, they will say, “3 times 3 equals nine!”

Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5

Bean Bag Decides

Have a student toss a bean bag on the mat. Then hop to the bean bag, alternating between one and two-footed movements, saying the numbers as they go down the mat. (You can have them ‘whisper loud’ count or skip count while they jump down the mat.) When they reach the bean bag, have them pick it up and say the numeral the bean bag landed on.

Grade 3

Skip Count by Threes

Have your student start on the 3, clap, and shout, “THREE!” Then, jump on the 6, clap, and shout, “SIX!” Have them continue down the mat only jumping on the multiples of three.

Grade 3

Hopscotch for Threes

Have your students begin on START HERE. Have a student whisper “one, two” while jumping with two feet on the numerals one and two. (One foot on each numeral.) Then, have the student hop with one foot on the three, clap, and say “three” in a loud voice (if your learning environment permits). Continue alternating between two-foot and one-footed movements to the end of the mat. Repeat the activity until the student is comfortable with the activity.

Grade 3

Dividing by 10

Have a student toss a bean bag to a number on the mat. Have them jump to the bean bag. Then, have them divide that number by 10. To help them solve the equation, they will count how many jumps it takes them to get back to zero.

Grade 2, Grade 3

Rounding

Have students take turns rolling two dice. Have them use the numbers rolled to make a two-digit number where one die represents the tens and the other represents the ones. For example, if they roll a two and a three, their number would be 23. Then, have the students hop to the number on the mat that is closest to the number they made when rounded to the nearest ten.

Grade 3

Bean Bag Decides

Have a student throw a bean bag on the mat. Have them hop to the bean bag, alternating between one and two-footed hops. When they reach the bean bag, have them pick it up and say the numeral on that block. Ask them what 10 more is than the number on which the bag landed. Then ask what 10 less is than the number on which the bag landed. (Or 20 more or less, etc.)
