Hopscotch the Numbers

Have your student begin on START HERE. Have your student say “ten” while hopping with one foot on the 10. Then, have your student jump with two feet on the 20, clap and say “twenty.” Continue alternating between one foot and two-footed hops to the end of the mat.
Grade 1, Grade 2

Clipboard Math

Clip a math worksheet on a clipboard. Have your students figure out the answers to the problems by walking or hopping on the mat. Then, have them record the answers on the worksheet.

Grade 1, Grade 2

Adding and Subtracting by Tens

Write +10, +20, -30 (etc.) on index cards and place them in a pile or in a box. Have your student select a number on the mat to stand on. Have your student select a card from the pile or box. Have them move along the mat as they add or subtract according to the card drawn.

Grade 1, Grade 2

Matching Objects and Numbers

Have your students match the numbers on the mat with that same number of objects. Place ten objects on the number 10. Place twenty objects on the number 20. Place value blocks work great for this activity.

Grade 1

Hop by Tens – Backwards

Have your student start above the 100. Have them hop on the 100 and say “one hundred,” hop on the 90 and say “ninety.” Continue to the end of the mat. Follow the above instructions for staying in sync.

Grade 1

Hop by Tens

Have your student begin on START HERE. Have them hop on the 10 and say “ten,” hop on the 20 and say “twenty.” Continue to the end of the mat. As your student hops on each number, encourage them to simultaneously say the number name. If the counting gets ahead of the number your student is hopping on, encourage them to go back and start over.

Stepping (or hopping) on the number and saying the number name simultaneously is evidence of a child’s understanding of one-to-one correspondence, which is essential to all mathematical processes. Be sure your student’s hopping is in sync with them saying the number!

Grade 1

Fewer sides

Hold up two shape cards. The student will jump on the shape that has fewer sides.

Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4

More sides

Hold up two shape cards. The student will jump on the shape that has more sides. (Do the same with vertices)

Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4

Memory

Call out two or more shapes for your students to remember. Then, have them hop on the shapes in the same order. The more shapes you give them, the harder it is to remember the pattern! You can also write out the lists on notecards and have two students work together.

Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4

Speed Round Shapes

Call out a shape. The student has to quickly jump on that shape. Try to go as fast as you can!
