Activity Instructions

Write addition and subtraction problems with fractions having the same denominator on index cards. Have students use the Equivalent Fraction Mat as a number line to help them solve the questions. For example: 1/6 + 3/6. The student stands on 1/6 and takes 3 steps forward to 4/6. For subtraction problems, walk backwards.

Sample Questions:
What is ⅙ + ⅚?
What is ⅜ + ⅜?
What is 2/7 + 4/7?
What is 2/10 + 5/10?
What is ¼ + 2/4?
