Have the students put varying amounts of popsicle sticks on each square that says “part”, count them, and then add them together to make a whole. Making the sum out of the correct number of sticks and putting it on the “whole”. Have a second student check their work by counting the parts and seeing if they equal the whole. Once the students understand how to add numbers cards with numerals on them could be used in place of the sticks.
