Activity Instructions

Put objects at several points all around the mat (small cubes or even animal figurines work well). Set two decks of cards next to the mat (minus the face cards, keep Aces, A=1). Have students take turns turning over a card from each deck. The numbers they turn over will be their coordinates: black cards are positive numbers and red are negative for this game. If they “hit” one of the blocks on the mat they win it. The person with the most blocks at the end of the game wins. Example: Student turns over a red 4 and a black 6, they look at the mat for the coordinates -4, 6. If there is a block/figure at that coordinate, they win it and remove it from the board.
