Multiplication Hopscotch

Have students hop both feet onto 1 and 1. Then, have them hop one foot on the product, 1. Continue with this pattern (two and two, and then the product, four, and so on). As they hopscotch down the mat, encourage them to shout out the multiplication sentence they are on. For example, 1 times […]
Squares

This mat is useful to reinforce teaching about square numbers. Once students know that a number multiplied by itself makes a square, have them hopscotch down the mat using that vocabulary. For example, 5 squared is 25. 6 squared is 36.
Square Root Hopscotch

To reinforce teaching about square roots, have students hopscotch the mat starting from the top (10×10) and ending at the start (1x). As they hop, have them call out the square root of each number. For example, the square root of 64 is 8. The square root of 49 is 7, etc.
Bean Bag Toss

Have students take turns tossing a bean bag onto the mat. Then, have them hopscotch down to where it landed. When they reach the number it landed on, either call out that number squared (if it is a double number) or it’s square root (if single space). For example, if the bean bag lands on […]
The Word Hop

Have the student begin on START HERE. As the student jumps down the mat, have them recite the months of the year. Be sure that your student says the words correctly. Tell your student a word if they don’t know the word. Continue jumping and saying the months until the end of the mat. Repeat […]
Word Match

Write the months of the year on cards/paper. Have students pick a card and jump down the mat to find the match for their word. (For younger students just practice one word a day until they get used to finding and reading that word before adding more.)
Bean Bag Decides

Throw a bean bag on the mat. Students jump to the bean bag alternating between one and two-footed steps and then read the word it landed on. Extension: Ask them to answer, without looking at the mat, what month comes next/before the one they are on.
Mad Word Hatter

Create word cards that match words on the mat. Place cards in a large hat or a box. The student draws a word and then hops on the mat to the word. When the student finds the word, they shout the word (if the learning environment permits loud noises.) The student places the word card […]
Word Clapper

Create word cards that match words on the mat. Place cards in a large hat or a box. The student draws a word and then hops on the mat to the word. When the student finds the word, they jump on the word three times, saying the word and clapping simultaneously.
Birthday Month

Have students stand on their birth month (or alongside if crowded). Have them call out their month in order, starting with the kids with birthdays in January. Observe which month has the most birthdays, the fewest.
