Matching Cards

Using the printable equivalent fraction cards, have the students match the card to the spot on the floor mat. As they place the card on the mat, have them jump and say that fraction. Download Cards
Grade 3, Grade 4

Building Fractions

Have students grab a handful of legos or blocks (no more than 10 total). Have the student count the total number of items. This number is the denominator. Then, have the student separate the items by color. The total of each color makes different numerators.

Example: Student A has 3 green blocks, 2 blue blocks, and 4 yellow blocks. 3/9 blocks are green, 2/9 are blue, and 4/9 are yellow. Have the student find each fraction on the mat.

Grade 3

Shading Shapes

Provide each student with a Math & Movement ‘Shaded Shape Worksheet’. Have the student use the floor mat to complete the worksheet. The student will stand on different fractions on the floor mat that the worksheet asks them to go to. They will then shade the corresponding fraction on the worksheet.

Grade 3

Matching Shapes

Hand a student one of the shape cards. Have the student match the card with where it appears on the mat. (Hint: It may occur more than once!)

Grade 3

Comparing Fractions – Full Class Activity

Have students stand on different fractions around the mat. Ask the following questions:
“If you are standing on a fraction greater than ½, raise your hand.”
“If you are standing on a fraction less than ½, raise your hand.”
“If you are standing on a fraction equivalent to ½, raise your hand.”
Have the students select new fractions and replay the game!

Grade 3

Ordering Fractions

Divide your students into groups of three. Give each pair various fractions to order. For example, order the following fractions from smallest to largest, ¾, ½, and ⅛ .

Each student will stand on one fraction and determine the order based on where they are standing on the mat. Have the students work through each question on the worksheet using this same process.

Grade 3

Comparing Fractions – Greater Than, Less Than, or Equal To

Pick two fractions on the mat. (Students select, you select, or roll a dice.) Have a student stand on one of the fractions and another student stand on the other fraction. Have the students put the tips of their toes on the black line at the top of their fraction. For example, give Student A the fraction ⅓ and Student B the fraction 2/8. Have the students then determine which fraction is greater, which is less than, or if they are equal. To do this, students can place a yardstick or string in between their two fractions. Students can also slide their feet straight across the mat. If the yardstick, string, or their feet are in the exact same line, then the fraction is equivalent.

Grade 3

Denominator / Numerator

Ask your students the following questions:
“Jump on a number with the denominator of ____”
“Jump on a number with the numerator of ____”

Grade 3

What is a Fraction?

Define numerator (how many pieces you have) and denominator (how many pieces the whole is divided into). Create ‘denominator’ and ‘numerator’ cards. Have students place each card by its respective place on a fraction on the mat.

Grade 3

Class Fractions

Have the class surround the outside of the mat. Choose one student to start at the bottom on the ½. Have that student jump and land on the black line above the ½. As the student lands, the class and the student says “½.” The student then jumps and lands on the black line above 2/2. As the student lands, the class and the student says “2/2.” Then, the student jumps to the left and lands on the 1 in the purple column. As the student jumps, the class and the student say “2/2 makes a whole.”

Then, choose another student to do the same thing with the thirds column. Continue this pattern throughout the rest of the mat. When the students reach the sevenths column, have them jump to the 1 on the right side of the mat.
