Have students grab a handful of legos or blocks (no more than 10 total). Have the student count the total number of items. This number is the denominator. Then, have the student separate the items by color. The total of each color makes different numerators.
Example: Student A has 3 green blocks, 2 blue blocks, and 4 yellow blocks. 3/9 blocks are green, 2/9 are blue, and 4/9 are yellow. Have the student find each fraction on the mat.
