Angles

Have students create different angles on the mat using the clock hands. Ask them to relate the angle they make to the time. Examples: What time would make a 90 degree angle? Name a time that would make an acute/obtuse angle?
Grade 4

Elapsed Time

For this activity, you will need two sets of clock hands. Place each set of clock hands at different times on the mat. Have students determine the difference between the two sets of hands.

(This activity is useful for helping students map out word problems that deal with elapsed time when two times are given.)

Grade 3

Adding and Subtracting Time

Write +5, +15, +27, -30, etc. on notecards. Have a student create a time on the clock (yardstick and ruler, cardboard/paper hands, their arms and legs). Have the student select an index card and add or subtract the time according to the card drawn and recite the new time made.

Grade 3

Partner Clock

Have two students sit in the center of the clock. One student is designated as the hour hand, the other the minute hand. Announce a time (or have another student announce a time). The students sitting on the mat will create the time with their legs. Repeat the activity with other times.

Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3

Clipboard Math

Clip a time worksheet on a clipboard. (3 worksheet options are provided below or use your own!)Have your students figure out the answers to the clock problems by walking or jumping on the mat.

Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4

Duck, Duck, Goose

In this activity, twelve students sit around the clock, one student on each of the multiples of five. One person is “it” and walks around the mat. As they walk around, they tap the heads of the students sitting around the mat while quietly skip counting by fives.

As soon as the “it” student shouts the multiple of the student they are behind, that student becomes the “goose.” The “goose” gets up and tries to chase “it” around the mat. The goal is to tap the “it” before the “it” is able to sit down in the “goose’s” spot. If the “goose” is not able to tag the “it,” they become “it” for the next round, and play continues. If they do tap the “it” person, the person tagged has to sit in the center of the mat. Then, the “goose” becomes the “it” for the next round. The person in the middle can’t leave until another person is tagged and they are replaced.

Modification: One student (the counter) walks around the clock touching the head of each student while skip counting by fives. As soon as the student makes a mistake in the skip counting (as a real error or an error purposely made), the student sitting on the mat closest to the “it” gets up and chases the “it” (the child counting).

Grade 2

What Time is it?

This is the reverse of the ‘Create the Time’ activity. Place the cardboard hands or the yardstick and ruler on the mat and have students name the time.
Grade 1-Time to the hour and half hour.
Grade 2-Time to nearest 5 minute mark.
Grade 3-Time to the nearest minute.

Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3

Create the Time

Write different times on notecards. Have your students use cardboard hour and minute hands, a yardstick and ruler, or their own bodies to create the times.
Grade 1-Time to the hour and half hour.
Grade 2-Time to nearest 5 minute mark.
Grade 3-Time to the nearest minute.

Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3

1/4 Fractions by Colors

Explain to your students that this clock is split into quarters (1/4 sections). Have students jump on each quarter and say “¼ (one quarter); 2/4 (two quarters), which equals ½ (one half); ¾ (three quarters); 4/4 (four quarters), which equals one whole.”

Grade 3

Jump by Fives – Backwards

Have your students start at START HERE. Have them jump the multiples of five backward, beginning with 60. Continue one rotation around the clock. Follow the above instructions for staying in sync.
