Race to the Start

Same as “Race to the Finish” but starting at “Find” and traveling to the top of the mat. Additional variation: Students may walk backward instead of Forward.
Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3

Race to the Finish

Two students line up at “I”. The first student rolls a 12-sided die and takes that number of steps. The student does something with the word he/she lands on: e.g., says it 3x while clapping or spells it while jumping once for each letter. The second student takes a turn in like manner. Continue until one student reaches the end of the mat or to some predetermined spot, like halfway through the mat. (Grades K-1)

Variations: Travel may be by rows or by columns. Older students may use 2 six-sided dice and multiply the two numbers to determine how many steps to advance. (Grades 2-3)

Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3

Simon Says

Play the game “Simon Says,” using instructions appropriate to the grade level. For younger students, you might say, “Stand on a word that begins with the letter _____” or “Stand on a word that has a short vowel sound.” For older students, you might say, ”Stand on a linking verb” or “Stand on a personal pronoun.”

Syllables

Can you find a word with 2 syllables? Jump to that word and think of a non-locomotor movement (e.g., bounce, kick, lunge, swing, twist, etc.) to represent the syllables. Lead the class in doing that movement once for each syllable while saying the syllable. Repeat several times.

Grade 1, Grade 2

Twister

Put your left foot on the word _____, your right foot on the word _____, your left hand on the word _____, and your right hand on the word _____.

Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2

Stepping Sentences

Give several students a sentence to build, either a statement or a question, by distributing index cards for words that will make a sentence. Have them study the words and then find them on the mat. Have them jump to each word in sequence, labeling it with a sticky note listing its number order and standing by the word. Then have everyone say the sentence, jumping or clapping with each word, directed by the students on the mat. In place of sticky notes, you may substitute poster board frames (labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) to place around the identified words.

Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2

Hopscotch Words

Choose two adjacent columns and call out their colors. Have a student start at the bottom of the mat with each foot under one of the two colors. The student travels to the top of the mat, alternating a jump with 2 feet on two blocks (saying the two words) with a hop on one foot on one block (saying the word.) The hops should alternate between the left foot and the right foot.

Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2

Rhyming Words

Can you find all of the words that rhyme with _____? One at a time, students jump to each word and put a sticky note on it. Everyone jumps/claps 3x while saying the word. Once all the words have been identified, students jump and say the words in sequence a few times. For younger students, pull and distribute index cards for the words that rhyme.

Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2

Bean Bag Sentences

Toss a bean bag onto the mat. A student jumps to the bean bag without saying the words along the way. The student jumps 5x on the bean bag word while saying it. Then the student comes up with a sentence using that word. Next, the student tosses the bean bag onto another word on the mat. Finally, the student calls on another student to have the next turn. Play continues in this manner, involving as many students as you deem profitable.

Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3

The Bean Bag Rules

Toss a bean bag onto the mat. Direct a student to jump on each word in that column up to the bean bag, saying each word as he/she jumps on it. For the bean bag word, the student should do 5 jumping jacks while saying the word 5x. Next, the student tosses the bean bag onto another word on the mat. Finally, the student calls on another student to have the next turn. Play continues in this manner, involving as many students as you deem profitable.
