Bean Bag Spelling

You or a student throws a bean bag onto the mat. Have the student jump to the word, say it, and spell it. Class repeats the spelling while jumping or clapping. (Grades K-1) Student throws a beanbag while blindfolded or with his back turned. Class or designated buddy reads the word. Thrower then has to spell the word correctly. (Grades 2-3)
Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3

The Freeze

Ask a few students to stand on their favorite words. Direct them to travel in a random direction using a specific type of locomotor movement when you say, “GO.” They are to keep moving until you say, “FREEZE!” At that point, each student says the word he/she is standing on 5x while jumping on it. Change the type of locomotor movement and give them another turn. Change students and continue the game. Examples of locomotor movements are walking, jogging, jumping (2 feet), hopping (1 foot), leaping (1 foot to the other foot), skipping, galloping, and sliding.

Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2

Race to the Middle

Similar to “Race to the Top” but with only one student from each team. When a student reaches the top of the column, he/she turns and goes down the next column. When he/she reaches the bottom of that column, the student turns and goes up the following column. Thus, the pattern of travel is up, down, up, down, continuously across the mat. The game stops when the students meet. The goal is to reach the middle point first (“Can” for Team A and “Is” for Team B). The Team that passed its middle point wins.

Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2

Race to the Top

Divide the class into 2 teams. One student from Team A begins at the bottom of column 1 (“May”), and one student from Team B starts at the bottom of column 10 (“Find”). On the signal to start, both students begin walking up their columns, saying each word as they step on it. Teammates may “coach” the student so the game goes faster. The student that reaches the top first earns a point for his/her team. Take 2 new students and assign them to columns 2 and 9. Continue until all columns have been covered. The team with the most points wins.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Word Match

Write each word on an index card. Distribute one card to each student. Ask them to match their card with the same word on the mat. One at a time, students jump to their word and place their card on it. Other students say and clap the word 3x. Students may be paired for ease in locating their words on the mat.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Word Cover-Up

Cover up all but a small portion, like 2 rows, with a tarp, a sheet, or a blanket. This allows students to focus on a small portion of words and practice them only. Start with the top two rows. The easier words are at the top of the mat. The level of difficulty increases as one approaches the bottom.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Words by Color

Use each column like a Word Hop Mat. One student starts at the bottom and jumps on each word up to the top, saying the word as he/she jumps on it. The class says each word and jumps in place.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Find the Word I Say

Write each word on an index card. Put the students in small groups. Pick a word from the index cards and say it. All groups try to find the word on the mat. When a group finds the word, they send one student to jump to the word and put a beanbag on it. The group that identifies the word first gets one point. Play to a predetermined number of points.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Crawl and Trace Words

You or a student throws a bean bag onto the mat. Have the student crawl to the word, say it, and trace it. The class claps and says the word 3-5x while the student is tracing the word.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Beginning Letters Treasure Hunt

Choose a high frequency letter. The high frequency letters on this mat are “a” (11x), “f” (6x), “g” (7x), “h” (9x), “i” (7x), “m” (6x), and “s” (8x). One student will jump and another will write down the words on the worksheet. The challenge is for the class to work together to find all of the words beginning with a certain letter. Sequence: You choose the letter. The student with the worksheet announces how many words on the mat begin with that letter. The class looks for words beginning with that letter. When someone finds one, he/she shouts it out and directs the jumping student to the letter while the person with the worksheet writes it down. Continue until the class finds all of the words. (There are worksheets included for this activity.)
