Word Hopscotch

Have a student begin on START HERE. Have the student read the first word. The student hop on the word with one foot while simultaneously saying the word. Have the student read the next word then jump with two feet on the space while simultaneously saying the second word. Continue alternating between one foot hops and two-footed jump to the end of the mat.

Word Match

Create word cards that match the words on your mat(s). Place the cards in a box or in a pile. Have a student draw a word card. Then, they will jump to that word on the mat. When the student finds the word, they will shout the word (if the learning environment permits loud noises.) The student places the word card on the corresponding word and selects another word.

Modification: Instead of shouting the word, the student hops on the word three times, saying the word and clapping simultaneously.

The Word Hop

Have a student begin on START HERE. Have them read the first word. Have them jump on a word while simultaneously saying the word. Be sure that your student says the words correctly. Tell your student a word if your student doesn’t know the word. Continue hopping and reading words until the end of the mat. Repeat the activity until the student is comfortable with reading words.

PreK, Kindergarten

Mad Word Hatter

Create word cards that contain the initial sounds on your mat. Place the cards in a large hat or a box. A student draws a word and then hops on the mat to the corresponding initial sound box. When the student finds the initial sound of the word, have them shout out the word (if the learning environment permits loud noises*). The student places the word card on the corresponding place on the mat and goes to the hat to select another word. For example, if the card they draw says, “chip,” the student places it on “ch.”

*Variation: Instead of shouting the word, the student jumps on the box three times, saying the word and clapping simultaneously.

Bean Bag Decides

Place an end sound card at the top of the mat. Have a student throw a bean bag on the Word Blending mat. Be sure the bean bag lands on one box. Have them hop to the bean bag, alternating between one and two-footed hops. Have them pick up the bean bag and blend the initial sound and end sound to make a word.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Word Blending Hop

Have your student place an end sound card at the top of the mat on the box that says ‘Place Card Here.’ Then, have your student stand on START HERE. Have your student say the initial sound in the first box. Then, have your student say the end sound at the top of the mat. Next, have your student jump on the first box blending the initial sound with the end sound to make a word. Ask your student if they have created a real or silly word. If the student has created a real word, have them cross their right leg over the left and tap “real word.” If the student has created a silly word, have them cross their left leg over the right and tap “silly word.” The student repeats the activity for each of the initial sounds on the mat. Repeat the activity until the student is comfortable with blending words. Repeat with different end sound cards.

Guide your student’s selection of end sound cards to avoid word combinations that create profanity. Point out to students that sometimes silly words in English are real words in other languages.
