Root Word Hop

Lay out the end sound cards. Have your student hop on each end sound card (or next to the card if you are on a slippery floor) while simultaneously saying the sound. (The mix of cards depends on the mat version you have. For example, Word Blending Mat Single R-Z includes ‘um’, ‘ut’, ‘un’, ‘ug’, ‘ud’, and ‘up’.)
Kindergarten, Grade 1

Creating Sounds

Have your student jump down the mat while simultaneously saying the corresponding sound of each letter (or pair of letters depending on the mat version). Continue to have your student say the sounds as they jump up the mat. These are the initial sounds.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Number Bonds

Have students practice making different two-digit numbers into parts of tens and ones. For example, place the number 23 on the “whole.” Students then place 20 in one “part” and 3 in the other “part.” Do this with several numbers.

Grade 1, Grade 2

Make Twenty

Place a 20 (on a notecard, a printed number card, popsicle sticks, etc) in the whole part on the mat and a number less than 20 in one of the parts. Have the student find the missing part. Practice several different combinations.

Grade 1

Make Ten

Place a 10 (on a notecard, a printed number card, popsicle sticks, etc.) in the “whole” section on the mat and a number less than 10 in one of the parts. Have the student find the missing part. Practice several different combinations.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Make Five

Place a 5 (on a notecard, a printed number card, popsicle sticks, etc.) in the “whole” section on the mat and a number less than 5 in one of the parts. Have the student find the missing part. Practice several different combinations.

Kindergarten

Dice Decide

Have students roll two dice (the larger the better). Place one of the dice in each “part” on the mat. Have students add together the number of dots on both dice and place a number with the total on the whole section of the mat.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

How Many Combinations?

Place blocks/sticks in the “whole” square. Have students work together to see how many different combinations of parts they can make to equal the same whole. Continue with many different “whole” numbers. For example, if 8 is the whole, the parts could be 1 and 7, 2 and 6, 3 and 5, 4 and 4.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Subtraction

Have the students put popsicle sticks on the “whole” square and one “part” square. Then, have them subtract the amount of “part” sticks from the “whole” to determine the other “part.”

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Addition

Have the students put varying amounts of popsicle sticks on each square that says “part”, count them, and then add them together to make a whole. Making the sum out of the correct number of sticks and putting it on the “whole”. Have a second student check their work by counting the parts and seeing if they equal the whole. Once the students understand how to add numbers cards with numerals on them could be used in place of the sticks.
