The Circle Walk

Take the circle walk around the circumference of the circle from zero to 360 degrees. Have your student step on the points of the circle as they walk. Have your student step on 30° and say “30 degrees.” Then have your student step on 45° and say “45 degrees.” Continue around the entire circumference of the circle. Please note that zero and 360° are the same point on the circle.
Grade 4, Grade 5

Past Tense

This mat can be a great teaching tool for present and past tense.
Have a student throw a bean bag onto the mat. Have the student stand on the word that the bean bag has landed on. Then, have them find the past tense version of the word and ask them to stand on it. If the past tense is not on the mat, have them say the past tense. If a past tense does not apply to the word, then have them explain why.

Grade 1, Grade 2

Clipboard Word Fun

Use a worksheet provided on the following pages that helps students learn the sight words. Have students jump on the mat to solve the worksheet.

Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3

Sentence Fun

Have students take turns tossing a bean bag onto the mat. Have them jump to the word it lands on, read the word, and then use it in a sentence.

Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2

Form a Sentence

Have the student jump on words that form a clear sentence.

Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2

Undercover Words

Use a tarp, blanket, old sheet, or scrap paper to cover up all rows (or columns) except the first one. Have students practice with these words first. Make it a big mission for students to completely uncover all of the words on the mat. Students have to get all of the words correct in the uncovered row (or column) before they can move on to the next.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Rhyming Words

Have students find words that rhyme. For example, have them look for any words that rhyme with the word ‘me.’ Have them place sticky notes, scrap paper, or another type of marker on the rhyming words.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Sticky Letters

Put a sticky note on all the words that start with “l” or “m” or “n,” etc.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Twister

Use the game ‘Twister’ as your basis for this activity. Instead of a spinner, you can call out words or draw from word cards you created. Students must follow your instructions. If a student falls or places a hand or foot on an incorrect word, they are out of the game. Continue until only one student is remaining.

Round 1 example: Right hand on “by”
Round 2 example: Right foot on “look”
Round 3 example: Left hand on “cold”

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Word Match

Create word cards that match the words on the mat. Place the cards in a pile, hat, or a box. A student draws a word and then jumps to the word on the mat. When the student finds the word, they will shout it out (if the learning environment permits loud noises.) The student places the word card on the corresponding word and selects another word.

Modification: Instead of shouting the word, the student jumps on the word three times, saying the word and clapping simultaneously.
