Find the Place

Have a student create a number on the mat. Instruct the student to pick up the card in the tenths place, in the tens place, etc. Continue until they have identified all of the place values in that number.
Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6

Build and Jump Combo

Combine the Building Place Values and Jump out the Number activities.
Have students create a number with the number cards. Then, have them build the number using place value blocks or popsicle sticks. Once they have finished building the number, have them go through the Jump out the Number activity. As they say each number, have another student check the blocks/popsicle sticks to make sure they have the correct amount! If they both have the same number, the student counting the blocks/sticks will call back, “Check!”

Grade 4, Grade 5

Jump out the Number

Create a number on the mat, going up to the place value you are working on in class. Have students jump out the number.
Example: 1,315.608
Jump on the 1. Say “1.” Jump on THOUSAND. Say, “thousand.”
Jump on the 3. Say, “3.” Jump on the HUNDRED. Say, “hundred.”
Jump on the 1. (This is where it can get a little tricky! Explain that the one in a tens column combines with the ones column.)
Jump on the 5. Say, 15.
Say, “AND.”
Jump on the 6. Say, 6. Jump on the TENTHS. Say, “tenths:”
Jump OVER the zero. (Emphasize that the zero’s are skipped and not said.)
Jump on the 8. Jump on the THOUSANDTHS. Say, “thousandths:”

Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6

Building Place Values

Once your students are gaining a better understanding of the place values with the activity above, you can have them add on and build the number with blocks or popsicle sticks.
Create the number 7,869.219
Put the number 9 card in the box at the top of the mat above the “thousandths.” Put the rest of the numbers in their boxes at the top of the mat. Have students build the number to show the value of each digit with the place value blocks, popsicle sticks, and a manipulative you use for decimals. Place nine “ones” (single sticks) in the ones box. Place six “tens” (bundles of ten sticks) in the tens box. Place eight “hundreds” (bundles of one hundred sticks or ten bundles of ten sticks) in the hundreds box. Put seven “thousands” (ten bundles of one hundred sticks) in the thousands box.

Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6

Hopping Place Values

Have students create a number by placing the numeral cards in the boxes at the top of the floor mat.
Example: Create the number 2,345.678. Start at the thousandths column. Jump on the 8 and say, “8 thousandths.” Jump on the 7 and say “7 hundredths.” Jump on the 6 and say, “6 hundredths.” Jump on the 5 and say, “5 ones.” Jump on the 4 and say, “4 tens.” Jump on the 3 and say, “3 hundreds.” Jump on the 2 and say, “2 thousands.”

Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6

The Place Value Walk – Backwards

Stand on the mat on the thousands column. Say, “thousands.” Step to the hundreds, say, “hundreds.” Then to the tens, say, “tens,” and to the ones, say, “ones.” Continue to “thousandths.”

Grade 4, Grade 5

The Place Value Walk

Stand on the mat on the thousandths column. Say, “thousandths.” Step to the hundredths, say, “hundredths.” Then to the tenths, say, “tenths,” and to the ones, say, “ones.” Continue to “thousands.”

Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6

Multiplying

Have a student create a number on the mat. Then, have them multiply it by 100, 10, .10 or .01. Which way do the digits shift? Have them move the number cards to reflect the new number.

Grade 5

Rounding

Have a student create a number on the mat. Then, have them round the numbers to all of the different place values. Use 0 cards for any place after the place value they are rounding to.
Grade 3: Round to 10s and 100s
Grade 4: Round to any place

Grade 3, Grade 4

Expanded Form

Have a student create a number and jump it out on the mat. After reading the number, have them write each numeral’s value on an index card and place it above each numeral. For example, after reading the number 439 students would write 400 on a card and place it above the 4, 30 and place it above the 3, and 9 above the 9.
