Clipboard Math

Clip a math worksheet on a clipboard. Have your student figure out the answers to the place value problems by walking or hopping on the mat.
Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5

Adding or Subtracting Numbers

Create notecards, writing + and – with numbers up to the amount of digits you want them to add or subtract (+125, -56, etc.). Mix up the cards and place into a large hat or box (or in a pile on the floor if you do not have those items available).

Have a student create a number on the mat up to the amount of place values from which they are able to add or subtract. Have them select a card and add or subtract this number from the number displayed on the mat (depending on the plus or minus from the index card). Begin with the ones digit. Have them figure out the new number in the ones column and place it above the mat. Check to see if the tens digit needs to be modified, then the hundreds, continuing until they have completed the problem. Then, have them hop out their answer.

Examples using millions:
Build the number 1,230,435 then add 2,345,742 to the number. What number do you have now?
Build the number 3,459,439 then add 5,280,190 to the number. What number do you have now?
Build the number 8,290,367 then subtract the number 1,347,860. What number do you have now?

Bean Bag Decides

Have a student create a number and jump it out on the mat. Then, have them toss a bean bag on one of the number cards on the mat. Have the student remove the number underneath where the bean bag landed and replace it with a new number card. They will remake the number with the place value blocks and hop to read the new number.

One Change Leads to Another

Write + 1000, +100, +10, +1, -1000, -100, -10, -1 on notecards. Mix up the cards and add to a large hat or box (or in a pile on the floor if you do not have those items available). Have a student select a card and add or subtract place value blocks (at the bottom of the mat) according to the index card. Then have the student change the number cards (at the top of the mat) accordingly to create the new number.

Grade 2, Grade 3

Adding Hundreds

Hand a student a hundreds block. Have the student figure out where to put the hundreds block on the mat. Have the student figure out how the numerals at the top of the mat change after one hundred has been added to the hundreds place. Continue to give the student hundreds until there are ten hundreds blocks. Ask them, “What happens to the thousands place? What happens to the hundreds place?” (Answer: The numeral in the hundreds place becomes zero and the numeral in the thousands place increases by one.) Modify the activity and repeat by subtracting hundreds.

Grade 2, Grade 3

Adding Tens

Hand a student a tens block. Have the student figure out where to put the tens block on the mat. Have the student figure out how the numerals at the top of the mat change after ten has been added to the tens place. Continue to give the student tens until there are ten tens blocks. Ask them, “What happens to the hundreds place? What happens to the tens place?” (Answer: The numeral in the tens place becomes zero and the numeral in the hundreds place increases by one.) Modify the activity and repeat by subtracting tens.

Grade 2

Adding Ones

Hand a student a ones block. Have the student figure out where to put the ones block on the mat. Have the student figure out how the numerals at the top of the mat change after one has been added to the ones place. Continue to give the student ones until there are ten one blocks. Ask them, “What happens to the tens place? What happens to the ones?” (Answer: The numeral in the tens place becomes 1 and the numeral in the ones place becomes 0.) Modify the activity and repeat by subtracting ones.

Grade 1

Find the Place

Have a student create a number on the mat. Instruct the student to pick up the card in the millions place, in the tens place, etc. Continue until they have identified all of the place values in that number.

Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5

Build and Jump Combo

Combine the Building Place Values and Jump out the Number activities.
Have students create a number with the number cards. Then, have them build the number using place value blocks or popsicle sticks. Once they have finished building the number, have them go through the Jump out the Number activity. As they say each number, have another student check the blocks/popsicle sticks to make sure they have the correct amount! If they both have the same number, the student counting the blocks/sticks will call back, “Check!”

Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5

Jump out the Number

Create a number on the mat, going up to the place value you are working on in class. Have students jump out the number.
Example: 1,315,608
Jump on the 1. Say “1.” Jump on MILLION. Say, “million.”
Jump on the 3. Say, “3.” Jump on the HUNDRED. Say, “hundred.”
Jump on the 1. (This is where it can get a little tricky! Explain that the one in a tens column combines with the ones column.)
Jump on the 5. Say, 15. Jump on the THOUSAND. Say, “thousand.”
Jump on the 6. Say, 6. Jump on the HUNDRED. Say, “hundred:”
Jump OVER the zero. (Emphasize that the zero’s are skipped and not said.)
Jump on the 8. Say, “and eight.”
