Bean Bag Toss Addition

Have a student toss two bean bags on the same unit of measurement. Then, have the student add those measurements together.
Grade 2

Comparing Object Lengths

After measuring random items, have students compare their sizes. Ask them to find the difference in inches, in yards, and in feet.

Grade 2

Measure Object Lengths

Have students measure objects around the room. How big are they in feet? In inches? In yards?
After measuring one object (e.g. a student’s foot) compare other objects to it without actually measuring them first. Then, check if the students are correct by placing them on the mat.

Grade 1

How Tall Are You?

Have students lie on the mat next to each other two at a time to see who is taller. Measure them by inches. The taller one stays and the next student lies next to them and sees how tall they are compared to the other. Continue with this until you find the tallest student in the class (or the shortest, or the one closest to 4 feet, etc.)

Kindergarten

Speed Round

This requires 2 mats
Split your class into 2 teams. They will make a line in front of the mat. The first student in each line will be going against each other. The teacher will call out a word for these 2 students to spell. Students will race to place letter cards down in the appropriate boxes to spell the word. The students then must hop through the letters respelling the word and then repeating what the word is. Ensure that students do not rush through respelling the word and get ahead of themselves. The student that spells the word the quickest gets a point for their team, they go to the end of the line, and the next 2 students are up. Continue through the whole class.

Grade 2

Make a Wild Guess

Students will all stand in front of the mat. The teacher will place down some letters to spell a word on the spelling list. However, the teacher will leave some of the letters out of the word. Students will have to figure out what the word is, and fill in the missing letters. For example, the teacher wants students to spell the word “Flower” She places F, L W, and R down on the mat, leaving a box open for the O and E. Students will work together to place the correct letters down to spell the word. If students get it correct, they get a point. If they don’t, the teacher gets the point. See if students can beat the teacher.

Grade 2

Spelling Bee Spin-Off

Students will all stand in a line in front of the letter cards and the mat. The teacher will give students a word. One student at a time will place the letter down on the mat to spell out the word. If the student placing a letter gets it incorrect that student is out. Continue through the spelling list until you get a winner.

For example: Students are in a line. The teacher gives the word “Apple” student number 1 will go up and place an A in the first box. Student number 2 will place a P in the second box. Student number 3 will place another P in the third box. Continue down the line spelling the word. If a student places an incorrect letter, he or she sits down, and then other students continue to spell the word.

Grade 2

Quiz Me!

Have students get with a partner. One student will take the list of spelling words, and the other student will stand by the mat with the letter cards. Student A will say a word on the list, and student B will place the letter cards to spell out the word. Then, if student B got the word correct, Student A will give a thumbs up, and they will both spell that word together, and repeat the word. Continue through the list, and then switch positions.

Grade 1, Grade 2

Partner Practice

Have students partner up. You will stand at the front of the class and say a word (from their spelling list, or a previously spelled word) Partners will then work together to place the letter cards in the correct boxes to spell the word. Students will then jump through the boxes saying each of the letters and then repeating the word when they finish spelling it.

Grade 1, Grade 2

Spelling List Practice

Use your list of current spelling words. Scatter the letter cards on the floor. Call out one of your spelling words. Have the first student find and place the first letter card on the first box (light red). Have the second student find and place the second letter card on the second box (dark red). Continue taking turns with students until the whole word is spelled. Then, have your students line up at the beginning of the mat on the first shoes box (under the light red box).
Take turns having the students jump through the word as they spell it. To spell out the word, “sail”, for example: Stand on the first shoes box, jump on the b, say b. Jump on the second shoes box, jump on the e, say e. Jump on the third shoes box, jump on the c, say c. Continue with that pattern through the word.
