Adding and Subtracting Numbers

Write addition and subtraction problems on index cards and have your students use the number line to help them solve the problems. If the math problem says 6+3, then they will stand on 6 and take 3 steps forward to 9! For subtraction problems, walk backward or count up. Make sure your students say the numbers out loud as they move on the mat.
Kindergarten

One to One

Have students count the dots on each square aloud, making sure they are counting one dot for each number they say. When they have counted every dot on a square, they jump up and shout the number!

PreK, Kindergarten

Blast-Off!

Have your students pretend you are on a rocket ready for blast-off. Have one student start on the 10 and hop down the mat as the whole class counts down with them. “10, 9, 8, 7, …2, 1, blast-off!” Have your students jump up and clap while saying “blast-off!”

PreK, Kindergarten

The Number Walk-Backwards

Counting backward is a prerequisite for subtraction. Encourage your student to start on ten and take steps to zero while saying the numbers!

PreK, Kindergarten

The Number Walk

Have your student take the number walk from zero to ten. As the student steps on each number, encourage them to simultaneously say the number name. If the counting gets ahead of the number your student is stepping on, encourage your student to go back and start over. Stepping on the number and saying the number name simultaneously is evidence of a student’s understanding of one-to-one correspondence, essential to all mathematical processes. Be sure your student’s stepping is in sync with them saying the number!

PreK, Kindergarten

Identify the Numbers

Hold up a number on a card (number cards located on the following pages). Then, have the students hop to that number on the mat. To make it more challenging, you could cover the numerals (on the mat) when using numeral cards, or the number words (on the mat) if using number word cards.

PreK, Kindergarten

Random to One

Have the students start on a random number then jump to one, counting down as they jump.

PreK, Kindergarten

Random to Ten

Have the students start on a random number then jump to ten, counting up as they jump.

PreK, Kindergarten

Count and Jump

Hold up one of the dot cards located on the following pages. Have the student count the circles on the card and jump to that number on the mat.

PreK, Kindergarten

Contraction Sentences

Have a student stand on the START HERE block. Have them jump to the first two words and read them out loud. Use the words in a sentence. Then, have them jump to the contraction and read it out loud. Have them use the contraction in the same sentence as before, replacing the two words. Repeat this process for every set on the mat.

Example with “He” Contraction Mat:
Jump on “he is” with both feet. Use the words “he” and “is” in a sentence. He is going to eat oatmeal and bananas for breakfast.
Jump on “he’s” with your left foot. Use “he’s” in the same sentence you created for “he is” but replace the two words with the contraction. He’s going to eat oatmeal and bananas for breakfast.
