Spelling Contractions

Have a student jump on the first word (left single block) on the mat with both feet. Have them spell out the word while doing jumping jacks for each letter. Then, have them jump to the right and do the same for the second word. Next, they will jump to the first contraction and spell it, saying, “apostrophe” where the apostrophe goes. Vary the exercise for each set of words (jump in place, claps, arm circle, etc.) Example with “He” Contraction Mat: Jump on “he.” H-jumping jack, E-jumping jack. Jump on “is.” I-jumping jack, S-jumping jack. Jump on “he’s.” H-jumping jack, E-jumping jack. Apostrophe-jumping jack. S-jumping jack.

Squeeze Out the Letters

Tell students, “Contract means to squeeze together. So a contraction is two words squeezed together! The letters that get squeezed out are marked with an apostrophe.” As they jump down the mat, have them say which letters were squeezed out in each contraction.

Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4

Contraction Puzzle

Cover the contractions with paper. Have a student jump to the first set of base words on the mat. Then, have them place notecards over the letters in the base words that are ‘removed’ to create their contraction. Have them place an apostrophe card in the correct place to make the two words into a contraction. Then have them remove the paper over the contraction to check if they got it correct. Have them fix their edits if necessary. Once they have correctly created the contraction with the notecards, have them jump to the contraction on the floor mat and say the word!

Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4

Clipboard Contractions

Clip a worksheet that involves contractions to a clipboard. Have students complete the worksheet using the mat to find the answer to unknown contractions.

Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4

Matching Contractions

Create or use the word cards on the following pages that match the words and contractions on the floor mat. Mix up the words and put the words in a pile. Have students match the word cards with the base words and the contractions on the mat.

Extension: Cover up all of the contractions on the floor mat. Only give your students the contraction word cards. Have them find and match their cards to the missing contractions. Now cover all of the sets of the base words (the two words that are contracted)and give students the base word cards. Have them find and match their base word cards with the covered ones on the mat.

Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4

Bean Bag Decides

Have a student throw a bean bag on the mat. Have them jump to the bean bag alternating between two-footed jumps and one-footed hops (as described in the Contraction Hopscotch activity). Have them pick up the bean bag and say the two words that contract to make the contraction (that the bean bag landed) and the contraction itself.

Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4

Contraction Clap

Follow instructions for the Contraction Hopscotch activity. Have your students clap as they say the contraction.

Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4

Contraction Hopscotch

Have a student begin on START HERE. Have them read the first two words that contract while jumping with two feet on the mat –one foot on each word. Then, have the student hop with one foot on the contraction and say the contraction out loud. Be sure that your student says the words and the contraction correctly. Tell them the words if they don’t know them. Continue alternating between two-footed jumps and one-footed hops to the end of the mat. Repeat the activity until the student is comfortable with all of the contractions.

Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4

Make Groups

Have students get a dry erase marker and stand next to the mat. Give them a certain number, and have them circle that many dots to make a group of the number you gave them. For example, you tell student A to make a group of 7 dots. Student A will take their dry erase marker and circle 7 total dots.

PreK, Kindergarten, Grade 1

Count the Dots

Have students hop through the mat counting the dots as they jump on them. Ensure that they do not get ahead of themselves, and encourage students to start over if they go too fast.
