Vowel Hopping the Letter Name

Have your student begin on START HERE. Choose a vowel that is represented on the mat. Have your student walk up the side of the mat looking for that vowel. When they find it, have them hop on it and say the letter. Repeat the activity using all of the vowels.

The Alphabet Hop

This activity is a combination of the first three activities.
Have your student begin on START HERE. Have them hop on the letter A and say “a, apple, ahhh, ahhh, ahhh.” Then hop to the B and say “b, ball, bbb bbb bbb” (letter sound three times). Continue on to all letters of the alphabet.

Meeting on the Mat

Have two students stand on two different numbers. How many hops will it take for one student to reach the other?

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Add or Subtract 5

Give a student a number (roll a die, pull a card, or say it verbally). Then, tell the student to either subtract or add ‘5’. To solve, they will stand on the original number and take five hops towards 10 (to add 5) or towards 1 (to subtract 5).

Kindergarten, Grade 1

How Many Less

Same as the above activity, but have students make subtraction problems. For example, mark 8. Stand on 10 and see how many hops to get back to 8. Then, say the number sentence, “10 minus 2 is the same as 8!” Change the wording around and say, “8 plus what is 10?” Point out how that would also give the same answer.

Kindergarten, Grade 1

How Many More

Have a student mark out a number. Then, ask them to hop on the spaces following it and count how many are left until they reach 10. For example, the student marks 6. The student stands on 6 and hops on 7 and shouts 1, 8 and shouts 2, 9 and shouts 3, 10 and shouts 4.

First Grade Extension: When they reach 10, first graders can say what they just did in number sentence form (e.g., 6 plus 4 makes 10!).

Kindergarten, Grade 1

Compare Numbers and Amounts

Make a number (e.g., 3) with markers on 1, 2, and 3. Then, make a different number (e.g., 6) with a different color marker. Ask which is greater or less.
