Create a permanent letter hopscotch course on your school’s playground or blacktop using these large alphabet stencils! Give your students an educational space outdoors to practice literacy concepts such as letter, sound, and word recognition. Best of all, they will be so engaged while moving around and playing on these painted spaces that they might not even realize that they are learning!
Our alphabet stencils include all 26 uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as 26 vocabulary words – one starting with each letter. Additionally, this alphabet stencil set includes a frame to paint six hopscotch squares.
The hopscotch frame features two squares that are side by side and measure 9 inches wide by 9.75 inches tall. These squares are meant for the upper and lowercase letters. Above them, there is one large square measuring 12 inches wide and 9.75 inches tall. The respective vocabulary word is intended to be painted on top of this square.
Please see our product image for an example. The included frame allows you to spray paint six squares (four small, two large) at one time!
First, use the hopscotch frame to paint your squares. Then, use the letter and word frames to paint the alphabet. Our alphabet stencils are ideal for use with spray paints. Please see our painting tips below.
Total dimensions will depend on your layout. But with our large alphabet stencils, your outdoor space is sure to look bright, colorful, and fun! Plus, multiple students will be able to play on the painted space and practice the alphabet at the same time!

Materials: We use 7 mil clear polyester film (Mylar) for our stencils. This is a standard material for industrial stencils. The material is tear-resistant yet flexible. Cleaning is easy, so you can use them again and again!

How many applications do the stencils hold up for?
Many variables go into this answer. The best way to ensure a long stencil life is to clean the paint off your stencil after each use. There is no need to clean the stencil so it looks new; You just want to prevent paint from building up around the edges. Many of our customers have used a single stencil for hundreds of applications.
Is spray paint included?
No, paint is not included. The amount of paint needed depends on the design(s) you are creating. Additionally, we recommend having a group of volunteers to help paint – ideally 3 people or more.
What kinds of literacy activities are possible outdoors?
Take a look at our activity database for game ideas. Many of the activities that are possible on the Alphabet Hopscotch Stickers and Alphabet Hop Mat are also possible outdoors on a painted alphabet walkway!
Look for spray paint that is not acid-based and bottles that say “mural spray paint”. This will give you the least amount of pooling/dripping. Rustoleum oil-based spray paint is a great option. Oil-based paint in cans can also be used. We recommend asking your hardware store if you have questions about the type of surface you are painting on or the amount of paint you may need.
