Sample Activity
Create the Time
  • Write different times on note cards in digital format. Or, look at a clock with a digital display.
  • Have your students use Math & Movement hour and minute hands, a yardstick and ruler, or their own bodies to create the times that they see on the note card or display by hopping on the mat.
  • For example, you might ask students to create the time 2:15 on the mat; students will first stand on the 12 hour hand and hop out the hours first, landing on two.
  • The student will then place the hour hand down on the 2 where they’re standing.
  • In order to find where the minute hand should go, the student will go back to the top of the mat at START HERE and hop 15 spaces/minutes forward, landing on 15. They will then place the minute hand down on the mat pointing towards their feet.
  • Repeat this process for each time or note card. Students will see the relationship between analog and digital time.

Discover the Benefits of Teaching Time With Movement

Young students never like to sit still. In fact, students learn better while they are moving! Physical activity boosts blood flow and oxygen levels in the brain, resulting in greater learning comprehension and memory retention. Plus, movement-based learning helps young kids with developing fine motor skills.

In addition to teaching analog time, this learning clock can be used to practice skip counting by 5s. The clock features numbers for the hour, minute, and second hands. Each quadrant is colored differently to visually assist with “halves” and “quarters” of the clock. Students can hop around the clock on the hours and minutes to understand how many hours and minutes are on the clock.

Use the Clock Hop with movement-based learning strategies to help your students:

  • tell time to the nearest hour, half hour, 5-minute mark, and minute
  • understand elapsed time
  • practice skip counting by 5s
