Introduce word building to young students who have just learned the letters of the alphabet with our Make-A-Word Hop. Phonics and word recognition activities will become highly interactive and full of movement whenever you use this mat! Making words will be fun and exciting for preschool and kindergarten students learning to read.
Begin word building with the included cards (floor mat version) or write in your own letters (dry-erase laminated mat version)! At 30 inches wide and 54 inches long, there is adequate space for students to step and jump without taking up too much valuable classroom space. Make-A-Word Hop Floor Mat comes with 23 cards which includes 12 word cards and 11 letter cards. The dry-erase versions do not come with cards.
The Make-A-Word Hop can be used in a variety of phonics and word recognition activities.ย Have students stand in the blocks on the bottom row with feet pictured in them. Build phonics skills by asking them to make the sound of the letter in the block above their feet. Students can jump from one block to the next and sound out simple 3-letter words.
Introduce simple preschool words and teach high frequency words for kindergarten. Watch your students’ phonemic awareness and reading skills improve as a result of practice on this material. Best of all, movement-based learning will boost young students’ comprehension and memory retention, while also improving gross motor skills.
Overall, students will be well-prepared to keep learning sight words. Be sure to check out our activity database for more fun phonics activities!

Materials: Our regular floor mats are made from heavy-duty vinyl. They are easy to clean, durable, and long-lasting. Some teachers have used their mats for over 10 years! Laminated Floor Mats combine the power of our heavy-duty vinyl material with dry-erase laminate. The laminate works well with a dry-erase marker and can be cleaned easily.
Regular Floor Mat Includes: Mat with 4 blocks for building words, 12 word cards, and 11 letter cards
Additional cards are available for purchase.
Laminated Floor Mat: Laminated mat with 4 blocks for building words *Note: Dry-erase mats are not slip-resistant. Place the mats in safe, non-high-traffic areas.ย

“Before Math & Movement, our kids were really struggling with the concept of having to do mathโฆOur kids felt like math was scaryโฆNow, I donโt even know if they realize theyโre doing math…They absolutely have a different viewpoint. They feel like it is something they can learn.”
Fayth Jenkins
Principal
“We have used Math & Movement for over five years, and the results have been remarkable. The mats are durable and require no maintenance. The teacher who used the materials in nearly every lesson has the highest math scores in the school.”
Eva Williams
Principal
โItโs an amazing program. I love that itโs supplemental to our core curriculum. Itโs a really nice springboard and seems to support our math in focus series in a way that gets kids tired out at the same time!โ
Joe DiCaprio
Superintendent

I used the Make-a-Word Hop mat to teach spelling words to a second grade boy. His most recent test scores had been 0/10 and 4/10. I spent 20 minutes working with him on 9 of his 10 spelling words for the week. On his post test, he only missed 1 of those 9 words! He was ecstatic over this score and decided to use this methodology at home with his 5 extra credit words. He reported to me that he got all of them right after using the Math & Movement methods ON HIS OWN. Thank you, Suzy Koontz, for creating tools and methodologies that can radically improve not only a child’s knowledge and skills but also a child’s self-esteem and self-confidence!
